My kitten has a leg cut. What should I do and does she need a vet?

Hello I can't tell from the picture how deep that wound is but it does look infected and there's underlying tissue and possibly muscle exposed. I recommend takinh your cat to see a veterinarian as she could be licking at the site when you're not watching and causing further infection. It may need to be closed or the vet may decide it should stay open (with some infected wounds closing can cause an abscess to form) and put her on antibiotics and pain medication. She might also need an E collar to prevent her from licking the area further.

If the laceration is through the skin, then Snowball should be seen tonight if possible. The sooner the wound is treated or sutured, the greater the chance for it to heal normally. Additionally, an open wound is a potential source for infection. If you absolutely cannot have her seen tonight, place an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent licking or scratching and have her seen first thing in the morning. If there is active bleeding or discomfort, have her seen sooner.

Poor kitty! Since this wound looks rather deep and he is limping, I would definitely recommend having him seen by a veterinarian - it looks like he will probably need an antibiotic and possibly an anti-inflammatory or other pain medication, in order to treat the injury and help it heal.

I am so sorry Cotton got hurt. I would recommend bringing Cotton to an emergency veterinarian if there is one in your area. The wound needs to be clipped and cleaned out. It also may also need to be sutured. The veterinarian can also give Cotton pain medication and antibiotics. I would recommend getting an elizabethan collar so that Cotton cannot lick at the wound. The antiseptic wipes may sting so just some saline to clean it for now until you can get Cotton to a veterinarian. If you cannot go tonight I would recommend first thing in the morning. I don't know how severe it is, but if the bleeding cannot be stopped or you think Moya is in pain, I recommend having her seen by a vet as soon as possible. If the wound is healing, I recommend trying to keep the area clean and dry. You should monitor the area for swelling or discharge as these may be sign of an infection. I hope this helps!

Your vet can feel the leg and X-ray it to see if it broken or if there is just muscle damage from the laceration. It is best to keep the kitten confined to limit the activity in that leg until you can get her seen. Monitor the kittens ability to go to the bathroom.

The first step in wound treatment is to get the hair out of the way. You will need to use clippers to clip a wide area around the wound - you can't use scissors or a razor, you have to use the buzzing type of clippers. The next step is disinfection. I recommend using a first aid chlorhexidine scrub to gently rub into the wound, and wash copiously with clean water. You only need to do this once. The third step is to prevent Gio from licking the wound. Licking spreads bacteria and decreases the rate of healing. You will have to buy an e-collar or cone for her to wear since cats are very flexible and a bandage will not be able to stay in place on this area of her body. You can apply Neosporin ointment twice a day, making sure she doesn't lick it off. If you follow these steps, small wounds will often heal on their own. If the wound has already been infected, or continues to swell, oozes a creamy discharge, or he has a rectal temperature above 103 (normal is 100-102.5), Gio will need prescription antibiotics to allow the wound to heal.
