My kitten jerks awake, disoriented, urinates. Is it seizures?

Hi, Sorry to hear about Jack, the episodes you describing with hypersalivation (increased salivation), shaking and urinating on himself which are happening more during the night can be seizures. I would strongly recommend to have him checked by a vet sooner than later as a frequency of few episodes in a few weeks is high and needs to be managed asap. It is always very helpful in diagnosis to have a video of the episode to show the vet so if you can do that in case another episode occurs before the vet appointment. Hope he will feel better soon.

Hello. I'm sorry to hear that Guinness is having this issue. Yes, it sounds like seizure activity to me based on what you have described. You really need to get him to a vet for an examination and some bloodwork to start with. Epilepsy is possible however, if the seizures have just started now at 6 years of age, epilepsy as a diagnosis is less likely. Usually that shows up at a younger age - between 1 and 4 years. It's not impossible, but less likely. Seizures showing up at 6 years old OR if he has had more than one seizure within a short period of time then it is more likely to be something like neoplasia (cancer) somewhere in the brain or spinal cord. It is really best to document the seizure activity -write down when it happens, how long it lasts, what he does when he has the seizure and video tape the episode(s) if possible so your vet can see what is going on. Poor Maui!! I understand your concern for him. This definitely could have been a seizure, the decreased energy you are now noticing could be the post-ictal or post-seizure phase. Being completely relaxed such as during sleep can lower the seizure threshold for some animals. I would recommend that Maui be examined by your regular veterinarian. They may want to do some diagnostics (such as X-rays, blood work and a fecal exam) to rule out some conditions that may contribute to seizures. Your vet likely will not recommend any medications or treatments at this time, it is important to determine if this is a once off incident or if Maui is going to be prone to seizures long-term. I would recommend keeping a log of ahyvsusosct activity, especially any physical symptoms (such as limb paddling), and also duration of the episode.

Urinating in an episode like you are describing is usually caused either by a seizure, which often occurs at night, or by a 'syncopal' or fainting episode from heart disease. There are other causes as well however these would be the two that I would be most concerned about. With it being at night, a seizure is more likely, as fainting from heart disease usually occurs when they get excited and are more active. The reason they pee themselves in these episodes is because they lose consciousness. I would recommend having Riley seen by your vet. They will listen to his heart as well as maybe check some bloodwork and maybe check his urine. Best of luck with Riley.

If you can wake her up and the shaking stops it is not a seizure and is more likely movement associated with REM sleep. If you try to wake her up but she continues to have muscle tremors it could be a seizure or neurologic disorder and you should see your veterinarian. If you do decide to see your veterinarian a video can help them determine what might be going on.

Andre May be having mild seizures. If the episodes occur more than once or twice a month, it would be best to schedule an appointment with your vet for an exam and screening bloodwork for Andre to possibly be started on anti-seizure meds. Definitely bring a video of one of the episodes to help your vet accurately diagnose the episodes. Bloodwork would let your vet know if there are underlying liver/kidney issues that may be causing the seizures and would provide a baseline for tracking the effects of possible seizure meds (some seizure meds can cause long term damage to the liver). If Andre is excessively aggressive, an injectable sedative combination such as midazolam/torbugessic that is generally safe in seizure patients may be used by your vet prior to examining him and taking blood. Poor Indie! I'm so sorry you two are going through this. What you are describing is quite concerning. A few things to keep in mind: 1- does Indie have some sort of clotting disorder, thats making it possible for him to bleed inappropriately 2- is there an undiagnosed underlying cause of the seizures that could also be resulting in bleeding (for example, severe liver failure) 3- does he have markedly elevated blood pressure that could be increasing his likelihood of bleeding episodes. Definitely keep the neurologist appointment, but you might call and ask if they can put you on a "call" list, to call if they have a cancellation or earlier availability opens up. In the meantime, I suggest you get him in to your family veterinarian. They may suggest checking his blood pressure, and running bloodwork (to evaluate for adequate platelets and adequate clotting times, as well as checking liver and kidney values, etc.). They may also recommend altering his medication dosages or adding additional anti-seizure medications, as multiple seizures a day is not acceptable control, and your family vet can at least get started with altering medication protocols to try to get him some relief. If you have already seen a neurologist, please call and ask to speak with the neurologist's technician. They can relay recommendations from the neurologist while your appointment is pending.
