Kitten itching ears raw, has a lump. What's wrong and what to do?

Hi, my cat is only a few months old but she has beem itching the back of her ears to where she tears off her skin and fur, how do I get her to stop that? Also, she has a big lump that appeared today between her shoulders and is very visible, what should I do?

The most common cause of itching the ears in cats is from ear mites. These mites are incredibly annoying and cats will do almost anything to make them go away, including hurt their skin as you are seeing. You can try an OTC ear mite medication (see link below), but if it isn't better in a couple days, Sassy should probably be evaluated by a veterinarian.

I can't really tell you what is causing the bump between her shoulders. It could be caused by infection, inflammation, or even a tumor. I would recommend that Sassy have this checked out by a vet if it isn't getting better in a couple days.

Sassy most likely has ear mites which are small parasites in the ear that cause extreme itching. Usually you will see some black debris in the ears. This is common in kittens. I recommend you take her to your veterinarian for a diagnosis and treatment. They will examine the ear discharge under the microscope and get you medication to kill the mites and clean and treat the ears. The lump between her shoulders may be an abscess or infection under the skin from a cat scratch or bite. You can use a hot compress on it to reduce the swelling and pick off a scab if there is one so the puss inside can drain. Again if Sassy isn't eating well or the area is painful this also may need veterinary treatment including cleaning, drainage and antibiotics. The swelling could also be a vaccine reaction if she was vaccinated recently, particularly with a rabies vaccinations. That type of swelling will resolve in a few weeks. Hello! With out at least a picture of the bumps its hard to give you an idea of what may be going on. I can tell you that the most common reason cats scratch there ears is due to a mite infection. Another common problem are polyps in her ear, which are usually in the ear canal and can cause cats to scratch their ears. The bumps around the outside of her ears could be irritation from her scratching the area. Other considerations could be a primary dermatological problem and neoplasia. While age is certainly not a disease, neoplasia is more common in older pets and therefore has to be on the list. I do not think Spicy is any immediate danger. I would recommend having her seen by a veterinarian as for an examination of her ears and possibly some tests of the skin around the ears. Hopefully this helps a bit!

What's this rough, bumpy patch with white flakes behind my cat's ear?

Unfortunately, without seeing it in person, I can't say for certain what is causing this rough and bumpy patch beneath Shiki's ear. I can say that if she is scratching below her ear, that can be a sign of an ear infection, and I do think she should see a vet for it. Ear infections in cats can be caused by ear mites, yeast, or bacteria, and can only be treated by medications from the vet. I recommend having Shiki seen by a vet tomorrow to diagnose if she does have an ear infection, and to get medications to treat it if she does. It's important to treat any ear infection promptly, as leaving it untreated can lead to hearing loss.

My cat has a sore ear and bumps. Is it an infection or something else?

With a clean ear canal, the most common cause of tiny bumps on the ear itself is related to hypersensitivity reactions from insect bites. The inflamed and sore lesion in front of Teak's left ear is most likely due to self-trauma from him scratching. The concern is that this skin may be infected from the excessive scratching. Your best bet is to take Teak to his vet for an exam because he may need a course of antibiotics and antihistamines to manage this issue. Be sure that Teak is receiving a high quality flea preventative (such as Advantage or Revolution) monthly because flea bites can also cause bumps on the ears. I hope that all goes well!

What is this itchy bump on my senior cat's head near her ear?

This is a skin growth and is not going to go away without surgery. That being said, I’m not sure I would rush into surgery on an older cat for what is most likely a benign growth that is more of a nuisance than it is a health problem. I would monitor it, keep it clean and if it is really a constant bother to her, discuss the potential of surgery to remove it with your veterinarian.

Why does my longhair cat have dry lumps on her head near her ear?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This may be secondary infections due to allergies for example. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing her allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Why is my cat scratching, with lumps behind ears and swollen neck?

Oreo could have a bite wound and associated abscesses causing the swelling, or have ear mite infestations and be working on aural hematomas. Aural hematomas are fluid pockets in between the ear cartilages and are very painful. When cats have ear issues they often scratch and shake their heads because it makes them itchy and painful. Oreo needs to see a vet to get her on the proper medications to make her feel better. She may need to be on a steroid like prednisolone, antibiotics, and anti-parasitic medication for ear mites, if that is going on.

My cat has tiny bumps on his ears. What are they and how to treat?

Carbon has milliary dermatitis. It is often caused by a reaction to insect bites like knats, or from allergies. Basically it is a skin infection/irritation. Usually it will clear up on its own if the cause is gone. You can clean the skin with a mild antibacterial pad and apply antibacterial ointment. If Carbon goes outside using a flea prevention product will help repell insects too. Allergies are often seasonal so as it cools off and the bugs and humidity go away this should resolve.
