My 5-month-old kitten ingested Imodium AD. Is this dangerous for her?

Hi. Imodium is contraindicated in cats. Please don't give otc meds to cats as many are toxic. I would recomend a vet visit if she is not eating, vomiting and diarrhea. She may have parasisites, have ingested toxins, have primary GI disease or any number of other things. Unless prescribed for her I wouldn't recomend the amoxicillin/clavanuate as one of the side effects of this antibiotic can be diarrhea and vomiting. If she was prescribed this, contact her vet as they need to know she is reacting to it. Try offering small amounts of bland chicken and rice. If she can eat and keep it down gradually mix her cat food back in. But if not she needs a vet visit.

I can't say that it's safe to give her, and you have to be very careful giving human medications to young kittens, as you can accidentally do great harm. In addition, it may not be the right treatment for her diarrhea. For example, diarrhea in kittens can be caused by intestinal worms, which Metamucil will do nothing to help with treatment. You need to take her into a vet as soon as possible, as persistent diarrhea is dehydrating. The vet can diagnose what is causing her diarrhea and can treat her for it. Best of luck.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Overdosing of antibiotics is usually not a huge deal. It can cause an upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhea. I would monitor for these signs. I do recommend calling your local emergency clinic (or posting another question) including which antibiotic (Amoxyclav?, Doxycycline?, etc.), as this might change the answer and inducing vomiting might be recommended. Otherwise, just monitor for signs of an upset stomach and skip the next dose. Best of luck with Sumi!

It is certainly possible that your kitty could have swallowed them. While there are no specific toxicities listed for cats for this medication, the most likely side effect I suspect you will see is diarrhea. Dehydration can definitely be the result of the diarrhea, so if the diarrhea seems severe it would be prudent to have Alice looked at and rehydrated by a vet. Alice received about four times the recommended dose so definitely keep an eye on her closely for any gastrointestinal upset. Hopefully you'll find the pills laying around somewhere. Ideally, Ori should be seen by a veterinarian. Charcoal may help to a certain extent, however 200mg of Advil in a small kitten poses a risk of serious toxicity. Vomiting can be induced via injection to get the Advil out or to confirm it was not ingested. This is most successful within 2 hours of ingestion. Animals can show signs of toxicity after ingesting 1.5 mg per kilogram of body weight and Hunter may have ingested over 7 mg per kg. I would be concerned about the potential for serotonin syndrome secondary to this medication. It could cause agitation, high heart rate or blood pressure, muscle tremors or seizures. I would recommend seeing an emergency veterinarian to discuss treatment. Attempting to induce vomiting might be recommended if he ate the pill recently, but it can be difficult to get cats to vomit. Otherwise the recommended treatment would probably be IV fluids and monitoring in the hospital.

You don't mention how many tablets he ate, or how much he weighs. Like all toxicities, Imodium toxicity is dose-dependent, meaning the severity of signs is related to how much was ingested. Dosages of 1.25 – 5 mg/kg can cause vomiting, depression, and salivation. The best way to help him is to get him in to see a vet who can give drugs to control nausea and administer activated charcoal to absorb the rest of the drug in the GI tract. Fluids will likely help him feel better as well.
