Why is my kitten losing hair near mouth and has swollen ears?

This is a tricky question because a bacterial skin infection, ringworm, and skin mites can all appear very similar. The only way to tell them apart is by either treating for one of them or doing specific skin tests like a skin scrape, a skin cytology, and a fungal culture. I think it is ok that you are using the Malaseb shampoo for now. This could be due to a localized infection. One possibility (considering the recent illness) is a form of calicivirus that attacks the skin. This usually resolves on its own within 2-3 weeks, but may be complicated by secondary infections. This could also be due to a bacterial or fungal infection. It's best to take Miso to the vet (possibly the shelter vet), so they can try to identify the cause of this. For now, you can help by keeping the nose clean. You can do this by gently wiping with a cloth and warm water twice a day. You can then apply a triple antibiotic cream to the affected area after each wash. A lesion like that could be a bacterial infection or ringworm (which humans can get). Your best option is to have Mocha examined and tested for ringworm. Make sure to protect the area from rubbing and scratching and she should wear an elizabethan collar at all times. This does not look like a natural shedding and it does look suspicious for ringworm but a cut or abrasion can sometimes be this same circular shape. As you probably know, ringworm is contagious to humans as well. Ringworm can generally be diagnosed by your veterinarian and I recommend to get your kitty checked out so that you know what you were dealing with. Congratulations on adding Tiger to your family! There is a chance that its bacterial but I would be most concerned thats ringworm (which you can get from him!). I would recommend to take him into the vet for fungal testing and medications to start treatment just in case (while you are waiting on the results).
