My kitten still has a fever. Could it be FIV, FeLV, or parasites?

Without a full history and physical it is impossible to guess exactly what the cause of her fever is. Antibiotics will only help to treat bacterial infection but will not help with viral infections. Blood tests for FELV/FIV and feline herpes virus may help to identify underlying causes. I would continue with the lysine, a high quality kitten food and probiotics until test results come back

Ongoing chronic viral infections seldom present with a fever unless there is an additional infection due to poor immune system. Fever is an early response by the body to fight off a new infection - if this fails such as with FIP/FELV/FIV and the immune system fails to clear the infection long term there will not be a fever as a result of these infections. I strongly recommend testing given the ongoing, vague signs of debility which is common with all of these diseases

Poor Jasper! In addition to antibiotics, I would start Jasper on an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory) to help with the fever, if they have not already done so, since his kidney values are normal. It does happen occasionally that we see a cat that is obviously experiencing symptoms of a severe infection or inflammatory response, but we are unable to locate the source of the infection. If abdominal radiographs and ultrasound were not done, this is something additional that could potentially help discover the source of the infection. At this point, make sure he is eating, get the antibiotics into him, ask for pain medication like an nsaid (metacam, onsiar, etc.) or an opiate (buprenorphine) if they didn't send you with one, and give him time. I'm so sorry that your foster is not doing well. It sounds like she has been through a lot in her short life. Certainly, kittens that have a severe upper respiratory infection young in life can take a while to bounce back. You can perform a FeLV and FIV test at any time, but the results will have to be taken with a grain of salt at her age. The FIV test is an antibody test, so she could test positive if her mom was positive, but she may not have the virus. The FeLV test is usually a little more accurate in young kittens, but not always. The FeLV test looks for virus in white blood cells, so if her white blood cell count is low from her infection if may appear negative even if she has the virus. So while you can test at any age, you may need to repeat the tests again because of the reasons discussed above. So, I would recommend discussing it with your veterinarian to decide on the right route to go for your foster. Good luck! I hope that was helpful and answered your questions. Poor Nova! A kitten this young with a fever can have a number of different problems going on. If she is having trouble defecating, she could have either diarrhea or constipation issues, as both conditions can look the same in kittens and cause them to be uncomfortable and vocalize when they defecate. If she is from a feral litter, and her litter mates did not survive, I would be very concerned about a possible infection or congenital problem going on. She likely has intestinal parasites, given her history, and needs to be dewormed. At 4 months, she should be started on a vaccine schedule as well, if she hasn't been already. I would recommend you take her in to your vet to be evaluated. She could still have an undulating fever that needs to be treated with supportive care and potentially antibiotics for a potential infection. I would also recommend testing her for FIV (feline aids) and Feline leukemia, which usually can be done quickly in a hospital with a few drops of blood. This could be what is contributing to her being so ill. Good luck! I hope she improves soon!

Fevers in cats are really frustrating. They can have many causes, and sometimes we can’t find any cause at all (Fever of Unknown Origin - FUO). Sometimes IV fluids can help with the fever, and sometimes it will go away in a few days with or without treatment. As long as he is comfortable and eating, I wouldn’t be so concerned. It sounds like your vet has a good plan for treatment.

I'm sorry Bernadette was sick! It sounds like she's doing much better, but I would expect her to take a few days to be 100% back to normal. A fever that high can take a lot out of them. If she's still on antibiotics it can cause some stomach upset as well, which may be affecting her (don't stop the antibiotics without talking to your vet, though). I hope she's back to normal soon!
