Should I worry if my 7-week-old kitten drinks a lot of water?

Having an excess of fleas and drinking a lot of water doesn't typically go together. It could be if it's hot where you are, Cookie is drinking extra water to try to cool down. I do think a visit to the vet is a good idea, and be sure to mention this excess drinking. I hope this helps!

If your kitten is eating all wet food, he will get most of his water needs from the food. I would hold back on the steamed fish, only offering it as a treat, as more than that may upset the nutritional balance of the kitten food you're feeding. Also, if he is weaned, he does not need milk and may develop diarrhea if he gets too much. Again, a little taste, as long as there are no adverse effects is fine. Always make sure he has clean, fresh water available, but don't worry if you don't see him drink. To make sure he's getting enough water, you can mix some in with his wet food and/or offer him some low sodium chicken broth to drink. As long as he is healthy, happy and active, then you're doing the right thing.

Feed her wet (canned) kitten food 4 times a day. let her eat as much as she likes. She is still very young and normally should still be with mama and her siblings. Offer her kitten milk as well as water. She will get a lot of the moisture eating the wet food, however eventually she will start drinking water. Normally mama would teach her to drink water when it is time. Stick a finger in the bowl when she is in front of the bowl and wet her mouth. She should understand soon. Do not put the water next to her food. Cats do not like to drink next to the food. She will need lots of TLC, and you will need to play with her a lot (paper balls , string with a feather on it, etc)

Hi there! Congrats on your kitten! If your kitty is eating soft kitten food on his own, he may be getting enough fluid from his food. I would keep offering water, but I wouldn't be too worried about how much he's taking in as long as he continues to grow and be playful with a good appetite. As long as water is available, he will figure it out. Canned kitten food is more complete and balanced than formula, so if he's eating that then it's a better option than formula. You could encourage a bit more water intake by adding extra water to his canned food and mixing it into a slurry. It wasn't indicated how long you've had him, so I'm not sure if the not pooping is a concern. Cats will generally defecate about 1-2 times daily. Of course, if you feel something isn't right, then it's best to have him checked out by your vet.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I think it Noushmc is otherwise acting 100% normal I think she will be fine. Just watch her closely. Also if she eats an all canned food diet there is a lot of water in that so animals will drink less. Or she could be drinking water from somewhere else (toilet, sink...puddle outside). Water intake can fluctuate a bit even in normal, healthy animals, based on their activity level, environmental temperature, and how much moisture is in their food. As long as a pet is eating well, and playful and happy with a normal energy level, then a decrease in drinking doesn't concern me. The more worrisome change would be a consistent increase in water consumption. If you notice that Moosh seems to suddenly have a consistent increase in his drinking habits, that warrants a vet visit. I only worry about a decrease in drinking if it is also accompanied by a decrease in appetite. As a general rule, if a pet is eating normally, they're drinking enough for their body's needs. But an increase in water consumption is always worth investigating, as it can indicate kidney disease, diabetes, or other internal concerns.

That certainly does sound like a big day for JJ! Vaccines, deworming and flea medication, and leg injuries don't cause sudden increases in water intake. Now, if JJ was kept at your vet in a cage without water for several hours for a drop off appointment, then it would be reasonable to expect him to drink a lot of water at home. If he wasn't dropped off away from water, I'd be more inclined to suspect another issue, such as a urinary tract infection. Diabetes and kidney disease can also cause pronounced increases in water consumption, but they would be highly unusual in a kitten as young as JJ. If JJ continues to drink excessive amounts of water tomorrow, then I would certainly take him back to the vet for evaluation. Your vet will likely want to at a minimum check a urine sample for evidence of infection. I hope that everything goes well!
