Why is my new kitten having diarrhea after eating canned chicken?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I think that dietary indiscretion as you pointed out could certainly be a possible reason for Eddie to having diarrhea. You can try to switch to a sensitive stomach type diet like the Science Diet healthy development diet for kitties. If no improvement is noted then I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment as other things are possible like intestinal parasites. Good luck!

She's adorable! I would be a little more concerned that she might have intestinal parasites or another disease causing her diarrhea. I would recommend seeing a veterinarian if you have not taken her in already. They can check a stool sample and she may be old enough for vaccines at this point. If there does not seem to be a medical issue you could try seeing how she does on just wet or just dry food - kittens sometimes do better on one vs. the other.

Poor Sushi! The diarrhea could be due to many conditions including the new diet, bacterial over growth, parasites or even organ disease. If the diarrhea has continued beyond 24 hours, I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian. With continued diarrhea, there are often bacterial shifts in the gut that will make matters worse regardless of the initial cause. Make sure to bring in a sample of fresh stool. The doctor will check her for parasites and bacterial over growth. Many times a bland diet can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normal food can be done. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. I hope Sushi starts feeling better quickly! Yes I suspect it's the kitten food causing Buddy to have an upset stomach and vomit. Sudden changes in diet can lead to these symptoms. Feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones or skin) in small amounts a couple times a day for a few days, the start slowly adding in his normal diet. If he refuses to eat the bland diet, vomits the bland diet, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, continues to have diarrhea, has blood in his stool, and/or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet immediately. It could be a change in diet if you are feeding Hank something different from what he had before. It could also be he has an illness. Vomiting and diarrhea together are pretty serious. You need to take him into a vet now. Best of luck.

Kittens may have diarrhea and low energy due to a number of conditions including intestinal parasites, viral infections, or a change in diet. I recommend having both kittens examined by a vet as soon as possible, as it is likely that the condition is contagious. To speed up the diagnosis, I recommend bringing a stool sample from the sick kitten in a disposable container for your vet to check for parasites. It is important to have the sick kitten evaluated as kittens can quickly become dehydrated and have low blood sugar, making them feel even worse. While it is unlikely that your son got sick from one of the kittens, it is possible. I recommend that you have him seen by a physician if you are concerned.

It could be that Ferdinand is suffering from intestinal worms. Those are very common in kittens, and if he is not up to date on his deworming treatments, I would pick one up for him. You will have to deworming him again in two weeks to make sure that all the worms are killed. If he is up to date on his deworming treatments, it could be he ate something rotten outside that upset his stomach when you weren't looking. In that case, I will give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps. Withhold food for 8-12 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.
