Does my 11-week-old kitten need deworming before her first shots?

You can clip the sharp very tip of the nails in the front legs with nail clippers. Just be careful not to clip in the pink part. Ivy should have her de-worming medication now (if she hasn't had it yet) and then again in 2 weeks time. She also should have her first vaccination when is is about 8-9 weeks old. Her second vaccination will be given 3-4 weeks after the first one. She looks like a happy, sweet kitten !

At this age I would recommend boostering based on the vaccine insert recommendations: typically 3-4 weeks. It’s best to deworm based on the results of a fecal analysis which your vet could perform. Otherwise broad spectrum deworming is typically recommended at 2,4,6 and 8 weeks. If your kitten has never been dewormed you could probably give a dose now and repeat in two weeks. In my area pyrantel would be the dewormer of choice.

I recommend the FVRCP vaccine as well as the rabies. If Kitty never received this vaccine then he needs two 3-4 weeks apart. The 2nd is good for 1 year the all subsequent are good for 3 years. Many times you will not see intestinal parasites until the animals are critically sick. It's recommended to deworm young puppies and kittens every two weeks for at least three cycles, due to the lifecycle of the parasites. I would recommend getting a product labeled for kittens such as pyrantel pamoate. Make sure you weigh them and get accurate weights to dose the medication. As soon as you are able I do still recommend a veterinary exam as they will need vaccines, feline leukemia testing and there are other parasites that the pyrantel may not address. Look in your area as there are often low cost vaccination clinics available through pet stores or feed stores if a full service clinic is not possible. Also check with your local veterinarian as many times they may offer a rate for a litter of kittens versus charging each animal individually. Hi, Vaccination as an adult cat who is not strictly indoors is annually so if she had her shots in Sep she is covered till Sep 2019 . Deworming is recommended every 3 months so she may be due that by now from her vet. And anti flea treatment is also recommended routinely, the frequency of application depends on the product used. Congratulations! What a beautiful kitten! Most vets start a vaccine series between 6-8 weeks of age, and will also deworm or check stool samples at the first visit. Following that, they typically need a visit/booster every 3-5 weeks until they are a few months old. The exact vaccines schedule will be individualized by your vet. They may also recommend parasite prevention or routine dewormers. Other things you can do at home include feeding a high quality kitten food, checking their urine and stool output and getting them used to being handled. Becoming well socialized is very important! Make sure they have plenty of vertical space like a cat tree, handle him gently and frequently - get him used to having his nail trims, etc. Don't let him bite you:) It looks like you are off to a great start!

Hello and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! At 13 weeks of age, Waffles will need her Feline Calicivirus-Panleukopenia-Feline Herpes Virus vaccine. She will need this vaccine 2 more times, each time given 3-4 weeks apart. I would also recommend she get her Feline Leukemia Vaccine at this time as well, especially if you plan on having her as an outdoor cat. She will need to receive a booster on this vaccine in 3-4 weeks. Depending on what state you live in, she may receive her Rabies vaccine now or when is 16 weeks old. There may be an associated county tag required to purchase. In addition, she will need a fecal test, Feline Leukemia/Feline Immunodeficiency virus testing (small sample of blood is taken) to ensure she is negative for these two viruses. She may need to be dewormed if she has not already. This is a tasty liquid that is given to kitties orally. I would also recommend you seek additional council from your primary care veterinarian. They will best be able to provide a tailored vaccine plan depending on Waffle's current and future life style.
