My 7-month-old cat had shots. Does she need another vet visit?

The recommended vaccination schedule for kittens is first shots at 8 weeks of age and then two sets of boosters at 12 and 16 weeks of age. You would be surprised how many times an owner has told me the kitten "had all of it's shots already" only to find out it only received one set. If Roky at all three sets of vaccines as stated above, then no, he doesn't need boosters. If the vaccine booster sets were not given at the correct interval (every 3-4 weeks) then he would need a booster. If Roky only received one set of vaccines or two sets, then he would need an additional booster. No offense, but if the vet is recommending the vaccine boosters then it is likely necessary. I would go with what the vet says before going with what the rescue says. It is a small price to pay to make sure he has the proper immunity going forward. Even if he is indoors only you want to make sure he has been properly vaccinated just in case he gets outdoors (this happens a lot). Also, I don't know where you live but in cases of emergencies (like hurricanes) people have to evacuate and the animals are sometimes boarded or kept with other animals that may have never had vaccines. The vaccines are for his protection. At the end of the day, it is up to you whether or not you want to do the boosters. I personally think it is better to be safe than sorry and get him the boosters. To be considered fully vaccinated, she will need at least a rabies vaccine, FRCP vaccine, and I recommend an FeLV vaccine for outdoor cats. These are all potentially deadly or extremely common viruses that cats can get from each other or wildlife such as raccoons. Although your cat is indoor only, there is a risk that she may run away and be exposed. I recommend having her microchipped and wear a collar in case this happens so that the two of you can be reunited. She should also be on monthly flea control, even f she is only indoors to prevent flea infestations.

Congratulations! What a beautiful kitten! Most vets start a vaccine series between 6-8 weeks of age, and will also deworm or check stool samples at the first visit. Following that, they typically need a visit/booster every 3-5 weeks until they are a few months old. The exact vaccines schedule will be individualized by your vet. They may also recommend parasite prevention or routine dewormers. Other things you can do at home include feeding a high quality kitten food, checking their urine and stool output and getting them used to being handled. Becoming well socialized is very important! Make sure they have plenty of vertical space like a cat tree, handle him gently and frequently - get him used to having his nail trims, etc. Don't let him bite you:) It looks like you are off to a great start!

There are no side effects and it's best for you and her to be protected, especially from rabies. She will need this vaccine 2 more times, each time given 3-4 weeks apart. I would also recommend she get her Feline Leukemia Vaccine at this time as well, especially if you plan on having her as an outdoor cat. She will need to receive a booster on this vaccine in 3-4 weeks. Depending on what state you live in, she may receive her Rabies vaccine now or when is 16 weeks old. There may be an associated county tag required to purchase. In addition, she will need a fecal test, Feline Leukemia/Feline Immunodeficiency virus testing (small sample of blood is taken) to ensure she is negative for these two viruses. She may need to be dewormed if she has not already. This is a tasty liquid that is given to kitties orally. I would also recommend you seek additional council from your primary care veterinarian. They will best be able to provide a tailored vaccine plan depending on Waffle's current and future life style.

You are welcome to take Mia to one of those vaccination clinics for her vaccination boosters and deworming. It is not recommend you try to deworm her at home yourself with a kitten this small. They can do it for you with her vaccinations. Kittens should receive vaccines at 8, 12 and 16 weeks of age. She will be fine to wait the extra week until she is 12 weeks old to receive the deworming.
