My 5-month-old kitten keeps biting when petted. What can I do?

if you play rough games with Fuji, he will continue to play rough. As a kitten this is cute but as an adult, this could hurt. I recommend to stop all games that encourage him to bite or scratch humans (even in play). Satisfy his desire to play with more constructive games and really get him moving. He wants to wrestle, encourage him to do so with a large stuffed animal. I hope this helps.

It sounds like you have your hands full! For better or for worse, this is typical kitten behavior. He will mellow out as he grows up, although he may always have a rambunctious personality. For right now, schedule some time every day to play with him using a laser pointer, balls, feathers on a string, or any other toys he loves. Aim for 10 minutes three times a day. Try your best not to scream and move quickly when he runs underfoot because he will think it's a game and do it more. If he's an only animal, instead of feeding him in a bowl a few times a day, hide kibble around your home for him to hunt - start really small with this to make sure he gets the idea. This actually sounds like normal kitten behavior. Was he hand raised as an orphan or weaned too early from his mother? Those are the most common reasons that a kitten would act out in aggression. I recommend you put some Feliway diffusers in your house and do some environmental enrichment for him. Usually these two things help. I am so sorry that you are experiencing these problems with biting with Baxster. I am sure it is very upsetting for you. First of all rest assured that this is a very normal kitten behaviour. Kittens learn through play biting and it is part of our role as pet parents to help them learn limits. I would not attempt negative reinforcement such as striking Baxster or speaking harshly as this will potentially create more serious behaviour issues such as anxiety and fear-aggression. Try some calm corrections and positive reinforcement. If Baxster bites you, simply say in a calm voice "no" and stop interacting with him for a few moments. This over time will teach him that biting is not a desired form of play. Also try reinforcing him as he starts to play in a good way by not biting, and giver her a small training treat. If Baxster does manage to bite hard enough to break the skin be careful of a possible infection. Monitor your wound for heat. Swelling, or discharge. Make an appointment with your doctor if this occurs. If you are struggling with the biting after a couple of weeks of the above suggested training methods, potentially a few sessions with a behaviourist. Though these behaviours usually diminish naturally as kittens age. Other games which may be fun with Baxster, and can be used to deflect unwanted behaviours are, hide and go seek either with you and another person, or you hide his toys and she has to find them. I would keep a toy on a pole nearby and distract her from playing with you to playing, attacking and biting the toy that is away from you. Bandit is a very young kitten and biting is how kittens tend to explore the world. The best thing to do is to just stop playing and walk away when he gets too excited, and refuse to interact until he has calmed down. Signs this is incoming/Bandit is getting over stimulated can include rapid tail flicking, pinned ears, stiff body, large pupils, etc. Once calm, play can resume with a toy that he can either bite on or chase, or something such as a laser pointer or teaser toy that he can pounce without coming into contact with your hand. Luckily, over time, kittens will settle down and chew on things less, and by not allowing him to nibble on you, will learn that it is appropriate to chew on other things instead.
