My kitten bit a ficus leaf. He's throwing up and lethargic. What to do?

I would be very concerned that he ate some of the plant or has an intestinal/stomach blockage. Your cat needs to get checked out by a veterinarian and potentially blood tests and/or X-rays done as some plants can cause kidney failure or liver issues.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be due to ingesting the plant as sometimes this causes vomiting. Sometimes it can result in inflammation of the mouth. Unfortunately, Bella really needs to see a veterinarian to at least be examined and treated symptomatically. That many episodes of vomiting can result in severe dehydration which is quite serious. As long as she only got a tiny amount, there shouldn't be anything to worry about. However, these plants can cause gastrointestinal symptoms and burning or irritation in the mouth, along with breathing difficulty, coma, or even death, if a sufficient amount of leaves is ingested. Keep an eye on her, if she will let you look in her mouth, check for any irritation, if she starts displaying any adverse symptoms, such as drooling, vomiting, lethargy or loss of appetite, get her in to see your vet right away.

Since he is uncomfortable and unwilling to eat, I think it would be a good idea to get him seen as soon as possible. Oils from fir trees can irritate the inside of their mouths, causing drooling and vomiting and ingested pine needles can collect together creating an intestinal obstruction or potentially puncture the intestine, leading to a painful condition called peritonitis. I feel it would be best to get him seen in case he gets worse or perhaps ate something else you weren't aware of. As you probably know, cats cannot go for long without eating before developing hepatic lipidosis, or fatty liver disease. Your vet will do an exam, possibly x-rays and labwork, and based on these results, will be better able to tell you what is wrong and how best to treat it.

All parts of the Chinaberry tree are considered to be toxic, so it's certainly possible that this could be the cause of your cat's symptoms. It's also possible that he may have some other, unrelated illness - many things can cause decreased appetite and vomiting, including liver or kidney disease, pancreatitis, an intestinal obstruction, or a GI infection of some kind. I would recommend taking your cat to the vet today for an exam - he/she can do blood work or other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem and get him started on appropriate treatment.

Depending on the type of plant, it may or may not cause harm. If you are able to take part of the plant to a local nursery and find out the type of plant it was, this would be helpful. The main things you want to look for are decrease in activity, decrease in appetite, vomiting or diarrhea. Also look in his mouth of any ulcerstions as some plants only cause a local reaction.
