Is it okay for my kitten and adult cat to share one litter box?

It can be stressful for cats to move into a new home. There are a few simple things you can do to help them litter train in your house. First, have at least 1 litter box per cat plus one; therefore, if you just have the two kittens, I would recommend 3 litter boxes. Second, make sure the litter box is large. The kittens will keep growing, and if it becomes too small, they won't use it. Third, some cats don't like covered litter boxes and some like them. You can try to boxes covered and uncovered, and see what they like best. I would recommend using the same litter that was used at their old home because they are used to the smell and texture. Make sure their litter boxes aren't close to their food and water, cats don't like to use the bathroom near their food source. While you are litter training them in your house, don't let them have free rein of the house when you are gone. Place them in a small room with their litter boxes while you are away from the house, and provide them with water and a place to sleep at the opposite end of the room from the boxes. Make sure you clean the litter box daily. If they continue to have problems going to the bathroom outside the litter box, it may be a health issue, and I'd recommend bringing them into your vet for a health check.

As long as both are using it with no issues, you can leave it there. You may need to change it more frequently though. The rule of thumb for litterboxes is 1 per cat plus an extra in a neutral location.

A pheremone product, such as teh Feliway Spray or plug in diffuser, may decrease any anxiety or aggression in the home after the introduction.

Try sprinkling a litterbox attractant in the box to entice him back. You can also use a pheromone product, such as Feliway Spray or plug in diffuser, to help decrease any anxiety associated with the new addition.

Some cats do not like boxes with lids so that would be the only problem but if you start at a young age (like you are) there may not be any problems with using it. Kisses to Nala!

The older cat probably has the smaller, younger one intimidated. I suggest providing more litter boxes, maybe one the smaller cat has exclusive access to. To avoid behavior problems due to territorialism, the rule of thumb is one litter box per cat, plus one, that way no cat can 'guard' all the boxes and limit access to the others. Make sure the timid cat has plenty of places to hide, perch, separate food and water sources if needed, anything to help her relax and be able to be less intimidated by the other. Also, make sure the older cats get plenty of attention, playtime, treats, to help them stay calmer and less likely to lash out. Calming diets are also available, if you have not tried them yet. Royal Canin and Science Diet both have well-received diets of this kind. Behaviorists recommend as many litter boxes as you have cats plus one. However I have 5 cats and three litter boxes and that works as well. I suggest you go to a big department store and get two plastic storage boxes (the see-through ones), (approx 12 inches high). Use clumping litter and preferably clean out the poop and the clumps every day. If this is not enough, add a third box. I suppose it is trial and error at the end of the day.
