What's the next step to introduce a stray cat to my other cats?

You can bring Green Eyes into your house but you should have him seen by the veterinarian first to get flea prevention, a deworming and fecal exam and a Feline Lukemia and FIV check. You want to be certain there is nothing contagious that can be spread to your other pets (parasites can spread on clothing, pets escape...etc). Keep him separated until he is comfortable in the room and then allow slow, one on one introductions. He may be very afraid of dogs as strays generally get chased but every pet is different. Cats can take a few weeks to acclimate to each other so expect some hissing and posturing. Don't allow any of the pets to fight or get hurt. Allow them to hear and smell one another through a closed door. You may then bring them inside small amounts at a time to get them acquainted to your home. If they are doing ok while inside, you may extend the time spent inside so that they get can experience the indoors. While inside you should feed them wet food and give them love so that they know that it is ok to be inside. This usually gets them liking their new home and makes for a smoother transition. Good question! You do the introductions slowly, yes. The ideal way is to put the kitten in one room and the other cats in the rest of the house. Once the kitten is cleared by the vet, you will want to put the kitten in the rest of the house and all the other cats in his room. Do this for 30-60 minutes a couple times a day. That way they can get each other's scents. Also, at this stage you will want to feed the cats by the door of the kittens room; feed the kitten on the other side of the door too. So they can smell the kitten and get a reward at the same time. Once that is going well you can use a baby gate to separate them at the door for feeding. After a few days if that is going well (no hissing etc) you can let them all out together. When I say feed them at the door I mean something really good that they will consider a treat like canned cat food, canned chicken or canned tuna. Make it a really pleasurable experience! I also strongly recommend you get some Feliway diffusers. It is "happy cat pheromones" that really works to calm cats down. Use it for at least 2 or 3 months time. Hope this helps. However, you can take some steps to slowly introduce a new cat to your home to ease the transition and make it as low-stress as possible for both cats. Also, be sure that both cats have been spayed or neutered to eliminate hormone-influenced aggression issues.
