Is it safe to introduce a new kitten to my male cat at home?

I am not sure what you are concerned about as far as safety. I do recommend keeping new kittens quarantined away from other cats for 2-3 weeks so you can monitor them for any illness that could be incubating. It can take time for cats to adjust. Getting a new cat is like getting a new roommate. Sometimes it is a perfect match and sometimes you can't wait to move out! Giving them time and space to adjust is the best thing you can do right now. You will need to have separate spaces, each space with its own food, water, and litter box. Sometimes using a feline pheromone diffuser can help with stress, like Feliway or Comfort Zone. Start with always supervising the interactions and play. If there has been no aggression shown when you are there to watch, you can gradually start to leave them to interact for longer periods. (Leave the house for just 10-15 minutes intially, and as they tolerate that, make it longer periods of time). I would hesitate to give them free range altogether if both males are intact however. If that is the case, I'd recommend that you keep the kittens in a separate room from the adult male cats. Make sure there are plenty of climibing surfaces, scratching posts, etc available as well as multiple food and water bowls and litter boxes so that no one feels threatened for resources. Take the kitten, and put her in her own room with her own food, water, and litter box. Keep the door closed, and for a few days, feed them both treats on other side of door so they associate each other's smell with a good experience. Then let the other cat in the kitten's room while the kitten is in a cat carrier. They can smell each other, but not be in contact. If either becomes upset or show signs of aggression, remove the second cat from the room, and try again later. Praise them when they interact appropriately. When they are interacting well with each other through the carrier, you can let the kitten out of her room, and see how she interacts with the other cat. Praise them when they interact appropriately, and separate them with any sign of aggression or upset. I would get a cat tree with lots of shelves to give the cats vertical space to get away from each other. Good question! You do the introductions slowly, yes. The ideal way is to put the kitten in one room and the other cats in the rest of the house. Once the kitten is cleared by the vet, you will want to put the kitten in the rest of the house and all the other cats in his room. Do this for 30-60 minutes a couple times a day. That way they can get each other's scents. Also, at this stage you will want to feed the cats by the door of the kittens room; feed the kitten on the other side of the door too. So they can smell the kitten and get a reward at the same time. Once that is going well you can use a baby gate to separate them at the door for feeding. After a few days if that is going well (no hissing etc) you can let them all out together. When I say feed them at the door I mean something really good that they will consider a treat like canned cat food, canned chicken or canned tuna. Make it a really pleasurable experience! I also strongly recommend you get some Feliway diffusers. It is "happy cat pheromones" that really works to calm cats down. Use it for at least 2 or 3 months time. Hope this helps. Introducing a new cat to the household can be quite disruptive. You will likely have to go back to the beginning, and give them time apart for several weeks. This will mean keeping the new male cat in a separate part of the house, where he can't be around your female cat. You don't even want them to see each other at this point, but it is ok if they are able to smell each other under the door. After a few weeks of this, try letting them see each other, but not in the same room. Finally, you can let them be in the same room, but make sure they are supervised and make sure that each cat has a way to get away from the other. I would also suggest that there are more than enough cats in the world - too many, in fact - and I recommend you considering getting both of them altered, instead of trying to force them to breed.

Hello. This is a tricky question to answer because you never know how things will go until you try. Some cats absolutely hate other cats, others love company, & others are OK with a newcomer as long as the food dish stays full. I would try introducing them shortly after you move. Give Kofta a few days to a week to get used to the new house first. Then, after she seems comfortable, introduce the new boy under supervision. Often, a kitten is readily accepted after a few swats & hisses. Make sure there are double the resources for the cats at first. 2 litter boxes in separate areas, 2 food & water dishes, & plenty of places to escape & hide ( save those cardboard boxes ). I am always rescuing cats & kittens, & eventually, everyone settles down. Good luck & take care.

Hi there and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Congratulations on your new kitty! In these situations it is best to do introductions very slowly. Some suggestions I have for you are as follows: 1) Use a Feliway diffuser to reduce overall tension in household 2) Go back to the beginning and over the first week introduce by smell only (introducing cats to each others bedding or something that has their scent on it) 3) Then introduce by sight only but no direct interaction. Do this for a week 4) Finally introduce cats together but only with direct supervision and with plenty of escape routes for both cats. Only leave them together for a very short time at first 5) Have plenty of tall cat towers and other things for the cats so they can observe each other from a distance 6) Have at least 3 litter boxes in different locations and definitely continue to feed separately and have separate water bowls.
