Why is my indoor cat shaking and meowing after being outside?

It's possible he is being skittish, just enjoys being outdoors, or has been injured and so won't approach you. It may be a good idea to contact your local animal shelter for a humane trap (one that doesn't hurt them when they enter it). You can then place it in his usual hangout spot with some smelly food (heated chicken or canned food) to entice him to enter. Once he's safely captured, bringing him to your vet to make sure he's OK after being out so long is best, and from there you can get him settled back in indoors.

The outdoor temperature is cold right now so if he was exposed to very cold temperatures for a prolonged period of time, he may be hypothermic. And you never rule out some medical reason like a fever. Since she was gone for so long, an examine with your veterinarian would be recommended. This may diagnose any underlying injury or infection. Frequently, either can be responsible for a sudden change in behavior. In the meantime, give her space and time to reacclimate to you. Don't force her to be held or pet. Offer treats and praise when she comes close. A pheromone product, such as Feliway Spray or plug in diffuser, may help to decrease any anxiety.
