My indoor cat got outside, now he's acting strange. What's wrong?

Hello. Your cat may have experienced some minor trauma or even an unpleasant event outside. I have seen cats chased by dogs & even dive bombed by angry jays that would come into the house & sulk. And you never rule out some medical reason like a fever. It is possible that he got bitten by something but I feel that it is probably not likely. If he is not neutered I would suspect this may have something to do with hormones. Any stray cats hanging around outside? Any abnormal behavior should be investigated if it persists. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Oh no poor Blu! I'm so glad you got him home. It is possible that he was injured on his adventure, and he could be suffering from internal injures causing him to not move much, eat, or drink. I would have him seen by a vet immediately, he needs a physical exam, blood tests, urinalysis, and x-rays. If any injuries are found, the vet can discuss treatment options with you.

Feed him and water him and examine him closely for pain, blood or injuries, check his nail (whether they are frayed...if so, he may have been hit by a car), observe him walk and whether he is lame. If all is well, he is probably just very very happy to be home again with you. He may have been very scared outside considering he is usually an inside kitty. Give him lots of TLC. If he keeps crying or has any signs of an injury, or appears ill or hurt, you should take him to ta pet ER tonight.

Cat bite wounds are common and could explain her abrupt change in behavior. If she is not acting normal by the time you return home today, then she will need to see her veterinarian. It's possible he is being skittish, just enjoys being outdoors, or has been injured and so won't approach you. It may be a good idea to contact your local animal shelter for a humane trap (one that doesn't hurt them when they enter it). You can then place it in his usual hangout spot with some smelly food (heated chicken or canned food) to entice him to enter. Once he's safely captured, bringing him to your vet to make sure he's OK after being out so long is best, and from there you can get him settled back in indoors.

Since she was gone for so long, an examine with your veterinarian would be recommended. This may diagnose any underlying injury or infection. Frequently, either can be responsible for a sudden change in behavior. In the meantime, give her space and time to reacclimate to you. Don't force her to be held or pet. Offer treats and praise when she comes close. A pheromone product, such as Feliway Spray or plug in diffuser, may help to decrease any anxiety.
