Why is my hamster still limping after taking MeloneX medication?

My hamster is 1.5 years old and suddenly started limping and I noticed he had a problem with his back right foot. I took him to the vet and he prescribed 'MeloneX' and said it's probably a joint pain. It's been 4 days since he's been on medication but is showing no sign of recovery. He has good cage space and is eating well. But I am worried about his foot. Please help.

I would expect him to be better after 4 days of taking the Melonex. That being said, some animals respond to medications differently so I suggest you give him a few more days on the Melonex before you say it is not helping.

Spinal injury is possible especially if Nefarix cannot move his hindlimbs. Hopefully, he is experiencing weakness and not paralysis. Take the wheel out of his cage so he can rest. Monitor his ability to urinate and defecate. If he cannot urinate or defecate, you must get him to a veterinarian as soon as possible.

Poor Math! I would limit his activity for a bit as best as possible and if he continues limping for more than a day, seems in pain, or new symptoms appear, seek out veterinary care in person to have him examined and treated.

Thanks for reaching out about Amber. A sprain or strain should heal well with some cage rest, but a fracture or other injury is better managed through a veterinary visit. If you have a chance to handle Amber, try touching the leg to determine how painful it it. Even a sprain could respond better with analgesic medications. Good luck.

It sounds like a recurring problem with Melo and it may be something like hypertrophic osteodystrophy or panosteitis. I recommend taking him back into the vet on Monday and I recommend an x-ray of the leg.
