Why is my hamster discharging black & smelly fluid after a fall?

Hi, This could either be coming from her digestive system (i.e. diarrhea ) or from reproductive system (uterus and vagina). This needs to be diagnosed correctly. One option is that she has a pyometra (infection of the uterus). In this case she would need surgery same as done with larger animals. In any case, you need to take her to the vet ASAP. Regards

He should be examined by your veterinarian. If he has "wet tail" (proliferative ileitis), he will need treatment and supportive care. Keep his cage clean. Change bedding daily if necessary. Keep him warm and as stress free as possible. Discontinue feeding any treats, fruits or vegetables until he recovers.

This does sound like unusual behavior. The good news is that Sandy is acting normal today. If she is continuing to act normal, exercise and eat and drink, I would just monitor her for the next couple of days. If her behavior changes again, she stops eating, or you notice the discharge again, then I would recommend you take her to the vet to be checked out. This presentation could be due to a trauma, a mass or a localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria or mites). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Keep the cage clean and warm. Keep him as stress free as possible. Stress plays a large role in illness or infection in hamsters. Discontinue feeding any fruits or treats until his stool is normal. If he doesn't begin to improve in a day or two, then he should be seen by your veterinarian.

Thanks for reaching out about Teddy and including pictures. It would be concerning that this would be an peri-anal abscess or obstruction. A veterinary visit is recommended, for tomorrow. The urine might smell worse because of a urinary tract infection or concentrated due to lack of drinking. Good luck with the veterinary visit.
