My guinea pig is still breathing heavy after respiratory infection. Should I worry?

I am sorry to hear about Pea. If she is consistently having heavy breathing with noticable body movement likely due to the effort I would recommend bringing her in to see the vet. She could have something like a respiratory infection that requires treatment, and with respiratory difficulty the sooner we address the problem the better the chance of a fast and full recovery!

Flash is probably suffering from an upper respiratory infection, it is very common in guinea pigs. you will need to take him to the vet in order to get a course of antibiotics, this should resolve the problem within 1-2 weeks.

Hello. I assume your previous veterinary visits resulted in x-rays, antibiotics, & a good assessment of diet & environmental conditions. If a dust free environment was not suggested, then change to something like Yesterdays News. If not, that is where I would start. Many young GPs can get a respiratory infection called Bordetella. Treatment involves using the antibiotics enrofloxacin (10 mg/kg once daily), & doxycycline ( 2.5 mg/kg every 12 hours ). Nebulization using saline & enrofloxacin may be very useful. Your veterinarian can recommend a protocol, but I like to do this 3 times daily for 10 minutes. Treatment with antibiotics & nebulization may need to be continued for as long as 21 days. Hi there, I'm sure you are concerned about Bam. Thankfully it is good news that he is still eating well as often when seriously ill GPs will go off their food. If this does occur then treat the situation as an emergency. Sneezing and wheezing coukd be indicative of a respiratory infection. Such are fairly common but can be serious. I would get Bam to an experienced vet asap as infections require prompt treatment; they do tend to respond very well. Alternatively, sneezing could be due to dust in bedding, allergies or even nasal mites. Again a trip to the vet should help shed some light. Consider the housing and environment, for example, bedding materisl, draughts and similar. Best of luck with Bam.

Thanks for reaching out about Belle. The hard part with this is that different bacteria can be contracted through different routes. Bordatella is a common respiratory pathogen of dogs and rabbits, and can be transmitted to guinea pigs. Other bacterias are common in the environment and become opportunistic. Still other might harbor deep in the lungs, awaiting the opportunity to cause problems. Good luck.

Hi and thank you for your question. Sorry to hear about Baxter. The timing (wrt getting him a friend) sounds coincidental, as one day is too short for most infectious disease to incubate. I'm afraid there is no over-the-counter medicine that I can recommend. It sounds like he has a respiratory infection, perhaps pneumonia, and this requires veterinary treatment ASAP. I know there are funding options that will allow you to pay for the treatment at a later date, I would suggest that you ask your vet about this. I agree that delaying it by 2 weeks is not an option. He needs to see a veterinarian to aid in diagnosis and treatment of the problem. Antibiotics are probably needed at the minimum. As this sounds serious, the sooner the better chance for recovery.
