My guinea pig is still breathing heavy after respiratory infection. Should I worry?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Guinea Pig | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 18 days old

She got treated for a respiratory infection about a month ago and the vet said she may have a permanent sneeze. So far she is sneezy but also still breathing heavy, she went through two weeks of medication. Should I be worried about her breathing heavy?

Thanks for reaching out about Buttercup. No all bacterial respiratory diseases are treated with the same antibiotics, and not all respiratory infections are bacterial (could be viral). No all respiratory signs are infectious, as heart disease can appear similar (but unlikely in a young guinea pig). If increased respiratory effort continues, additional treatment needs to be sought.
Good luck.
