My spayed kitten needs pills. How to give them safely after surgery?

I have 3 cats and they generally hate their medication as well. The easiest way to go about this is to grab a towel and burrito wrap the kitten in there to trap his legs and prevent him from scratching you, then scruff him (grab the back of his neck with one hand). I can certainly understand your frustration. Cats are very smart at not taking their nedicaiton. I would talk to your vet about getting his medicaiton compounded into a flavor that he likes. There also may be an alternative medication in capsule form that won’t taste like anything that you can hide in a soft treat or a pill pocket. Most vets carry pill pockets or you can get these from your local pet store in many situations (call first). And finally there is a “pill gun” or “pet piller” that your vet should be able to sell you to make it easier to give Diggie his medicaiton. I surely hope this helps you in giving Digger his medicaiton. And remember that cats will often feed off of our energy, so try to keep a level head and be firm with him, then cuddle him and praise him every time he takes his medication well. I also find it helpful to use a large soft blanket to help hold my cats still when I want to give them their medication. This also prevents you from getting scratched. Hi, if your vet has recommended antibs it is best to complete the course. Either by hiding the tablets in some smelly food such as tuna or sardines, or by giving it with easy pill or vivitreats (some treats where you can hide tablets). If the above is not working, you could ask to your vet if Kitty can have a long acting antibiotic injection. Hope this helps !

I would recommend giving a whole tablet to Carolina (12.5mg) and it is best to give this when Carolina is calm and relaxed. Sometimes it is best to set a 'trap' of sorts. If you get a large dog kennel, and put food inside this with the calmivet in the food, then you can close the door when she goes in to eat. There are risks with this pill, however the risks are small and the risk of her not being spayed are much higher than the risks of the pill. Side effects include severe sedation as well as low blood pressure. If you are monitoring her after she gets the tablet, you will notice she will be very sedate and you can bring her to the vet at that point where they can monitor her blood pressure. This may cause her to drool profusely. Additionally, if she spits it out, she may not get the full dose needed for protection. Consider using a Pill Pocket or a pill popper to get the medication into her.

This is a common problem with cats and it's likely that most of them don't get their full dose due to spitting or accidental wastage. While it's best to make sure she gets the full dose, there will be some effect even if she gets a little. I usually don't prescribe antibiotics for extractions unless there appears to be a bad infection. I'm sure your vet prescribed them for good reason, but you can always call and ask how important they are and let them know that it's nearly impossible to give. They may advise you to stop the medication, or have an alternative solution to the problem. I hope that helps and Vivian gets better soon.

I'm sorry to hear that Gabriel is so scared! Try coaxing him out of the closet with tempting canned cat food or a small amount of chicken or tuna. Warming the foods slightly will make their odor more prominent, which is often more tempting to cats. Once he comes out, you should be able to administer his medication. If he doesn't come out with temptation, you may have to go into the closet to catch him for the medication. You can give his medication by using your non dominant hand to grasp the top of Gabriel's jaw and point his nose towards the ceiling. Then, using your dominant hand, gently open his lower jaw with your ring finger and put the pill down the back of his throat with your index finger and thumb, or put a syringe in his mouth relatively far back if it is a liquid medication. Pill poppers are useful tools for putting a pill back relatively far in a cat's mouth so that you don't have to put your fingers in his mouth. If Gabriel becomes aggressive, stop your medication attempt and contact your vet about other medication options. I hope that all goes well!
