What's wrong with my new kitten's eyes after I just found her?

What you are seeing is the third eyelid which is elevated. The third eyelid shows like this when the animal is sick and/or in pain. It is not necessarily an eye problem. This can indicate a few things such as something called Horner's Syndrome, Haws Syndrome, or some type of injury to the eye or eyelids. It's not likely Horner's because that is usually one eye and is a neurological disorder of the eye and facial muscles. Haw's syndrome is more likely since it's both eyes. This is an odd syndrome of elevated third eyelids and often times diarrhea. Some people suspect tapeworm infestation or a viral cause for this syndrome. It's usually not treated and is most times self limiting and will resolve. Eye and eyelid injuries are often again only one eye but could less commonly be both eyes. If you don't notice any discharge, rubbing of the eyes, redness of the eyes, or pain I would just advise monitoring the situation. I did notice that her left third eyelid and eye looked redder than the right which could mean that she does have something going on with that eye, such as conjunctivitis. I would advise seeing your veterinarian and let them evaluate her. They can take a detailed history and perform a thorough examination. Once those are done, your vet can advise you on a diagnostic/treatment plan based on their clinical findings. Possible tests include a corneal stain, conjunctival scrape, etc. Conjunctivitis is commonly viral and/or bacterial in nature in young kittens. Also, your vet can advise you on a good preventive health care program for Scarlett. Good question. I hope this just resolves on it's own like most cases do.

You can get some cat wormer and worm her. Often third eyelids prolapse with heavy worm burdens. Watch her eye and if she gets a discharge and the squinting gets worse, then take her to a vet for an exam. Since you are taking care of her so far and she condiserrs your place her home, you may want to permanently adopt her ;-).

What you are seeing in the inside corner of Nala's eye is a normal structure called the third eyelid (or nictating membrane). However, it is not normally up as much as Nala's are in the picture. There are a few possibilities of why a third eyelid will be up more than normal. Some drugs will make them go up more, tapeworms (https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951442) can sometimes make them go up in cats, and any irritation of the eye can make them go up. Since it appears to be getting worse, I would recommend having your veterinarian examine her to see if they can find a cause. Congrats on your new cat, but I'm sorry Lilli seems unwell. Yes, it is possible that she does have conjunctivitis. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with it should be considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I would have her seen by a vet today to have her eye examined and diagnosed so it can be treated.

It looks like your kitty has a prolapsed third eye lid. This does not look like an emergency. It may be that she has worms (this sometimes causes prolapsed nictitating membranes/third eyelids). Should the eye start to ooze purulent discharge or get red or look like it is damage you should take her to a PetER. Otherwise you can wait until Tuesday, if the third eyelid does not retract by then.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Hazel. In this picture, both third eyelids look to be in their correct positions. The conjuctiva (lining to eyelid) of the left lower lid is very swollen. It is possible that the kitten scratched his eye while they were playing. He may also have an eye infection. He will likely need to see his veterinarian for a closer evaluation and medication. In the meantime, do not allow him to scratch the eye. I hope this information helps you and Hazel!
