Why is my dog throwing up and having diarrhea only at night?

Vomiting and diarrhea can be caused by many conditions primarily gastrointestinal in nature such gastroenteritis and gastrointestinal foreign body ingestion and obstruction or other conditions such as pancreatitis or kidney disease. I recommend that you have your pup evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include abdominal imaging and general bloodwork. You could try a bland diet composed mainly of boiled chicken and white rice which is easily digestible and can help with an upset stomach. Good luck and have a great day!

I'm sorry to hear that Buster isn't feeling well! Vomiting and diarrhea can occur as a result of a virus, parasites, stomach upset from eating different foods or treats, among other health conditions. If he is acting normally and still able to keep water down, you can try monitoring him at home first by withholding food for 12-24 hours. After that time, offer a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for a few days, then gradually transition back to his normal diet over another 5-7 days. However, if Buster's vomiting or diarrhea worsen, or if he becomes lethargic and stops drinking, a trip to the vet will be in order to assure that he has not become dehydrated and to get to the bottom of the problem. There could be a few different things causing his vomiting. It can be from a virus, a foreign body, an intestinal upset or even pancreatitis. I would recommend bringing him to the veterinarian for some testing to make sure it is just an intestinal upset. They can discuss with you antacids and a prescription bland diet. Given Boomer's older age and the acute onset of the vomiting/diarrhea, I would have him seen sooner rather than later by a veterinarian. Boomer could just have an upset stomach, but he also could have a foreign body, an infection or even a tumor causing these signs. Your vet will perform a full physical exam and determine if any additional diagnostic testing is needed (bloodwork, xrays ) and what treatments he made need. Good luck!

Gastric upset, or gastroenteritis, can be caused by many different things including toxins, raw meat, bones, bacterial infections, viral infections, or simply a food that doesn't agree with the body. Other possible causes include IBD, food allergies, and cancers in the gut. If she has a bit of diarrhea and GI upset, but is otherwise normal, eating/drinking well, and has good energy, then she likely just ate something that upset her stomach. I recommend that you feed her a bland diet of boiled/boneless/skinless chicken breast and boiled rice, in small frequent meals for the next 3 days. After this re-introduce a good quality kibble. If the diarrhea gets bloody, she stops eating, is vomiting, or weak and lethargic, then bring her to the vet for bloodwork and x-rays. Best of luck with Daisy! I hope she feels better soon!
