My dog licked dish soap. Why is he not eating or drinking water?

Withhold food for the next 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts. Begin with 1 tablespoon of food every hour and gradually increase the amount if there is no vomiting. Feed bland until symptoms resolve then transition slowly back to his regular diet. A small bit of plain toilet paper should pass on it's own without issues. Monitor for persistent vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. These are symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian.

Most human viruses cannot infect dogs, so that isn't a concern. Eating dish soap can cause upset stomach (vomiting or diarrhea) but it shouldn't last more than 24 hours. If you notice vomiting or diarrhea that last longer than 24 hours, I would have Snowball examined by a vet.

We will see mostly GI signs (vomiting and diarrhea) with most soap ingestions, but some soaps have ingredients that cause damage to the lining of the GI tract and can require much more intensive treatment. Shampoo and conditioner will definitely make a dog throw up. This should not be a week-long episode though. They usually throw-up a great deal in the beginning, but are fine after 2-3 days. Usually there are no other ingredients in these products that would cause any other toxicity beyond vomiting, but I would have to see the ingredients list to be sure of that. One possibility is that Frankie got dehydrated during his bouts of vomiting. Dogs can quickly get dehydrated with profuse vomiting and it's not easy for them to recover the lost water. Dehydration actually makes them feel bad and nauseous, which can perpetuate the vomiting and dehydration. If this has been going on for a week, then it's best for Frankie to see a vet. The vet can help determine how severe his condition is and at-least give the necessary treatment for dehydration and vomiting. I recommend you take Frankie to the vet within the next 24 hours. It's best to take the bottles of shampoo/conditioner with you to the vet. For now, you can add rehydration salts or pedialyte to his water. Dove soap isn't toxic, but you may see some GI upset from this. If you see persistent vomiting and diarrhea, bloating, pacing, pain, swelling of the face and muzzle, or difficulty breathing (the last two symptoms could be caused by an allergic reaction to ingredients in the soap), take Zoey into a vet immediately. I would recommend taking Bailey to your local veterinary ER. These types of products can be quite irritating to the gastrointestinal tract and also have the potential to be toxic in other ways. The vet will do a thorough physical exam and look for any obvious symptoms. They may also recommend you contact the pet poison hotline to gather more information regarding treatment depending on the severity of the symptoms. At the least you can expect to be prescribed some medications to help protect Bailey’s stomach and intestines from the irritants in this product. Dawn dish soap is usually non-toxic, and may just cause some stomach upset such as vomiting or diarrhea. You can try giving a bland meal of boiled rice and chicken to help settle his upset stomach. However, if he continues vomiting, or his symptoms worsen (lethargy, refusal to eat, pale gums/tongue) then bringing him into your local vet or ER clinic may be best.
