Dog kidney values increased on new food. Is this fast progression?

I would probably call this stable as well - some values are up while others are down. While these parameters are related to kidney function they do not directly measure kidney function and there are other things that could make the values vary slightly day to day. While a kidney diet can slow the progression of disease I doubt that adding a little cat treat to the food has made much of a difference and it is more important that Tony has a good appetite.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am sorry that Tony is experiencing early kidney disease. Yes a prescription diet has been shown to help with chronic kidney disease and there is a chance it could lower the SDMA and other kidney values. It will help with progression. I would be sure your Vet has checked a urine sample for protein and infection as well as a blood pressure. There are medications that can and should be started if those things are abnormal. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Tony. I agree that he is in the early stages of kidney failure based on the lab results you have provided. Kidney disease can cause low levels of potassium so it is good that you are supplementing him. Kidney values can fluctuate up and down a bit, but you want to assess trends over time to see how he is doing. SDMA and creatinine are more sensitive indicators than BUN. I would ask if his phosphorus level is in the target range for his degree of kidney disease (based on the IRIS staging) and make sure he has had his blood pressure measured recently. Hello. It is difficult to comment on Beau's kidney function because there is some vital information missing. I would need to see his BUN value, an SDMA analysis, & a urinalysis. SubQ fluids are always a good idea for cats with kidney insufficiency, but without the urinalysis, I cannot say if there is any azotemia ( a term used to describe kidney function abnormalities ). The same goes with the Azodyl, which may help pets with azotemia. With a creatinine of 2.5, & according to the International Renal Interest Society ( IRIS ), Beau's kidney insufficiency is a class 2, or mild, but we really need to see the SDMA to truly classify things. If his T4 is indeed 1.0, I would definitely decrease the methimazole, only you do want to keep the doses the same morning & night. Your vet should recheck the T4 in 2 weeks to see if the Methimazole needs to be decreased further. If the prednisolone is helping the bronchitis, then it is not necessary to stop it. His liver is perfectly fine, & depending on the dose, it too may be titrated down to the very lowest dose to keep him comfortable & control his symptoms. Hello, sorry to hear about Canela. It’s likely that your medical management of her is supporting her kidneys really well. However, kidney disease is considered a progressive disease, meaning it only gets worse. Despite this, progression may be very slow and thus patients may live a long life with medical management. Hello. It is possible that the new food is helping the creatinine levels, but regardless of the reason, this is good news. Remember, blood work is a snapshot of what is happening at the moment the blood was drawn. Twilight may have been a little more dehydrated at the last blood draw, & creatinine is a very sensitive marker of kidney function, more so than the BUN. So, be happy that the number is better today.
