My dog ate chicken and is itching. Can I give him allergy meds?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 12 lbs

Shadow has been eating Reggie's chicken formula food and he is allergic to chicken. He has been scratching his eyes and ears every 10 minutes. I feed them separately now but the food is still in his system. Is there a safe dosage of over the counter allergy med I can give him to relieve the itching?

Legally, we are prohibited from telling you to give Shadow an antihistamine without having first performed a physical exam. What you can do is review the information at the link below then contact your veterinarian to discuss any treatment options. He or she may want to see Shadow to give a steroid injection if the scratching is severe. Place an e-collar (cone) on Shadow to prevent excessive licking or chewing. A small t-shirt or baby's onesie may also help to prevent trauma from scratching.
