Hello. I am concerned that a possible problem has occurred by the use of medication in his ear. Also, a cat on Lantus needs to eat. This is a situation where you should see your vet as soon as you can. L-lysine was thought to lessen the effects of some herpes related upper respiratory infections, but it has turned out not to be very effective. There is nothing about L-lysine that will be of benefit for Handsome at this time. You do need to see if there is some other underlying condition affecting him, & you do need to check his blood glucose in case his Lantus dose needs to be adjusted. I hope he is feeling better soon. If she is alert and more stable on her feet then I would not give any more supplements unless signs indicate that. Be sure to take her a glucose check before administering any more insulin though. I would recommend trying to feed her several small meals every 3-4 hours though to help maintain a higher blood glucose

Please try to bring her appointment forward to get her rechecked and her blood sugar levels controlled more effectively if possible. It may be necessary to change her insulin type but she should also be checked for infections/inflammation etc which may be altering her ability to regulate her condition

It sounds like his diabetes is not controlled well. I would start with a glucose check and a urine test. This will confirm if the sugar is still high and if he has ketones in his urine. Ketones can make them sicker and feel bad. They usually require IV fluids and a different, strong but shorter acting insulin to help get it under control they can also do blood work to check for cushings or a low thyroid or a secondary infection somewhere as these are common with diabetes and makes it harder to control diabetes until these are treated also. Once the blood sugar stop fluctating and staying high, his appetite will come back and the drinking slow down.

You should take Kizzie back to a veterinarian for a proper thorough exam, with a urinalysis and blood work. Diabetes does not often have obvious signs, nor does kidney disease. Both of those can be ruled out with blood tests and urinalysis. Most cats with a UTI do not need antibiotics as most times it is stress induced. All the more it is important to verify that bacteria are involved before prescribing antibiotics. You may want to get a second opinion from another veterinarian.

These two illnesses are both common in older cats, so many cats are on treatment for both problems. But, it isn't normal for Willow to be acting tired and miserable since starting her thyroid medication - this indicates that something needs to be changed. Some cats get an upset stomach and don't feel well on the oral tablets, but may do better with a transdermal gel or other formulation. Other cats simply don't tolerate methimazole (the medication) well no matter what, so other treatment options may need to be discussed. In rare cases, we can see potentially serious side effects with this medication such as bone marrow suppression, which could also cause lethargy and weakness - so it would be a good idea to have blood work rechecked with your vet as well to make sure that this isn't the problem. I would recommend calling your vet today to discuss the issue and see what they would suggest as the next step.
