My 13-year-old cat won't eat, possibly leukemia. What can I do?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 13 years and 7 months old | 0 lbs

I'm giving my 13 yr old kitty Prednisone twice a day and Cyproheptad 45mg every other day. Blood work showed nothing & thyroid test was neg. They said prob leukemia but doesn't show in blood work? Can't afford more tests nor put him thru it. He still has energy to go outside but appetite down to almost nothing? What can I do? What to expect?

Hello and thank you for your post! I am sorry to hear that Dinky may have leukemia. Some changes on blood work that you can see include anemia, low white blood cell count and low platelets to name a few common changes we see. I am unsure whether or not you mean leukemia or lymphoma? Leukemia can be typically diagnosed with a snap test that your vet's clinic should have on hand that would help confirm the diagnosis. If lymphoma, abdominal ultrasound would help but to get closer to a definitive diagnosis for lymphoma, you would need intestinal biopsies. Unfortunately with both diseases, they tend to progress and worsen. You can talk to your vet about appetite stimulant drugs and see if you can get a prescription for this. I would be careful with the steroids as they can cause further immunosuppression and could make things worse. Offer lots of tasty foods and see if it is a matter of palatability as well. Anti-nausea drugs such as Cerenia (from your vet's clinic) may also prove useful in getting the appetite back. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Maybe and maybe not. You will need to talk to the doctor who is treating your cat as to whether or not he or she thinks that the poor appetite is due to the small cell or due to the leukeran. Hi and thank you for your question on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am sorry Ickle is having these issues- sounds like there is a lot going on with him.. It is hard to say what exactly is causing Ickle's symptoms without examining him first, but these symptoms could point to advanced stage kidney disease which is very common in cats and can cause lethargy, anemia, and inappetence as toxins that should be normally filtered by the kidneys build up in the body. Kidneys make a substance that stimulated red blood cell production so when the kidney function in compromised, this substance is not made as much as can cause anemia. Another possibility may be liver disease or certain cancers. A simple blood test can be determine what organ(s) are not functioning well so the appropriate treatments can be given. My senior cat won't eat. Are steroids safe for IBD or lymphoma?

Poor Kitty! Since she is already 17 years old and she is having such a tough time with her inflammation in her GI tract, I think steroids will be the best choice for her. If her blood work looks okay now, then I think she can tolerate the steroids. Unfortunately, if you don't put her on steroids the lymphoma or IBD may continue to get worse. It is true the steroids will not CURE lymphoma, but it certainly give her a better quality of life right now. It could keep the IBD under control and eventually you may be able to decrease her steroid dose to a lower dose. The concerns of long term steroids are much lower since she is already geriatric. If she was 4 or 7 years old, then I would be much more worried with starting her on long term steroids at that time. At the age of 17, our goal is to give Kitty are good quality of life. If you want more options about the lymphoma and interested in seeing an oncologist, I would ask your vet for a referral for a oncology consult. I hope this helps!

Cat on chemo: Why is my cat so picky about food during treatment?

I am sorry to hear about your kitty! A decrease in appetite is not unusual in cases of cats with cancers and on certain medications. Definitely keep your vet in the loop about where her appetite stands/how she is doing eating as they may want to adjust/add medications. Some cats enjoy the food warmed up, so you can try warming it in the microwave (always check temperature before feeding to ensure not too hot). Some prefer wet food, some kibble, some like kibble that has been soaked to soften it. Trying a buffet to give varieties to choose from may help you discover what she finds appealing.

My senior cat with cancer is losing weight and won't eat. Help!

Hello. I am so sorry that Oscar has such a sad diagnosis. Unfortunately, either one of these can cause a significant loss of appetite. The only two appetite stimulants we have for cats are mirtazapine & cyproheptadine, & even these are not miracle drugs. Some cats prefer foods that are warm, some prefer them when cold, so you can try this. Hand feeding may work a bit as well. You can also talk to your vet about the possibility of adding some anti-nausea medication like Cerenia. Hopefully, you can at least get Oscar to eat a little more for as long as possible. My cat has low blood counts, anemia, and jaundice. What causes it?

I am so sorry for your loss. I don’t see your kitty’s age, but if he/she was older, I would be most suspicious that he/she had cancer somewhere. Even though FeLV negative, it’s still possible that cancer developed in her bone marrow due to an unknown cause. (Which unfortunately is usually the case with cancer). When all of the blood cells are low, primary bone marrow disease (cancer, immune mediated disease) may be to blame. It’s also possible that there was cancer elsewhere and the bone marrow stopped working due to either spread of the disease or because of what we call a “paraneoplastic syndrome”, which is just a fancy way to say that unfortunately cancer sometimes does whatever it wants. Since she is otherwise normal, you can try a sensitive stomach formula food or prescription GI formula and add a feline probiotic to the food to help her.
