My cat has white balls and dandruff on its neck and tail. What is it?

Flaky skin could be a sign of allergies, some hormonal diseases like hyperthyroidism, poor nutrition or even fleas. If there is no hair loss and her skin appears normal otherwise you could ask your veterinarian about using an oral fish oil supplement to see if that helps. If there is any hair loss, red skin or scabs I would recommend having her examined by your veterinarian. Unfortunately cats tend to lick most topical products so I do not typically recommend using them. That's so lovely of you to take in Jasper and take care of him! It sounds more like the white stuff is dandruff due to dry skin. If it were fleas, it would be little black specks. It could be that he is deficient nutritionally, so you can try adding some fish oil supplements to his food. Bathing him with vitamin E oil may help as well, and you can also groom him regularly, as that will also help with the dandruff. Hope this helps!

This looks like dandruff from this picture, however if the white specks appear to be moving or jumping, then may be lice. I recommend giving the cat a bath with warm water to rinse off any dandruff. You can use a small amount of dawn dish soap too, but be VERY careful to not get any soap near her eyes. I hope this is helpful!

If they are moving then they are likely lice. You can apply a topical flea preventativeto such as Advantage or even Revolution can be used to kill lice. If they are not moving then this is likely large dandruff and pet formulated fish oils and well as a good shampo (ie Duoxo seborrhea shampoo) can be used. Best wishes with you and your pet Angel. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Sox. Is he biting or scratching the area? If so, he may be creating areas of self trauma due to be itchy. The most common causes of itching is allergies and fleas in cats. If he does not seem to be bothering the area, it could also be a ruptured cyst. This usually begins as a swollen area under the skin that then opens up. A white to grey material will ooze out. It would be a good idea for Sox to see his veterinarian to determine if a medication is needed. I hope this information helps!

Poor Snickett! Those spots on Snickett could be several things including allergies to fleas, something in the environment or food. Thyroid disease can also cause skin problems. I recommend for him to be examined by his veterinarian as they will likely prescribe treatment since it's all down his back. There are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they are unlikely to address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for pets, this can help improve the skin health.
