My cat wheezes and meows painfully. What's causing his breathing problems?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 6 months and 14 days old | 6 lbs

My cat has had occasional fits of wheezing since he was about a month old. He has episodes that can last anywhere from 2-30 minutes where he will just lay and wheeze. He also doesnt meow like a normal cat and seems to strain and be in pain whenever he meows. usually massaging his stomach seems to ease a little pain when he is wheezing but i dont now what else to do. I have tried changing his litter, changing food, washing his regular pillow and much more. I just dont know whats wrong with him

It sounds like it's time to have Gizmo see a veterinarian. There are some infectious upper respiratory diseases that get into the lungs and can cause wheezing. The episodes will continue or get worse until they are treated. Your vet will need to take some x-rays to see what is going on in his lungs before deciding on the right treatment plan for Gizmo. One of my cats had this problem as a kitten and does not wheeze any more since he was treated.

Hi. I'm sorry Gizmo is having issues. Sometimes kitties who allergies or upper respiratory infections have changes in the sounds of breathing like congestion. If it is truly wheezing, I'd be concerned about asthma. Cat asthma is a chronic inflammation of the small passageways of a cat’s lungs. When an asthma attack occurs, the small passageways thicken and then constrict. This can make it difficult fora cat to breathe. It can lead to respiratory distress, which can become serious very fast. The lungs may start make mucus into the airways, leading to fits of coughing and wheezing. Some kitties with less severe cases only experience a slight, chronic cough.

Asthma can quickly become a life-threatening health problem, any coughing kitty should a veterinary evaluation right away

My cat is wheezing and has abdominal breathing. Is it asthma?

I'd be concerned that Sock may have feline asthma. It would be worth a trip to the veterinarian to have X-rays done again on Sock to look for asthmatic changes. Asthma in cats is fairly common and can be treated with both inhalant medication and oral medications. An Aerokat inhaler can be ordered to help administer inhalant medications if necessary. Your veterinarian can also ensure that Sock is not experiencing another upper respiratory infection. I'd also recommend eliminating the use of perfumed cleaners, or perfumed or dusty litter types as these things can aggravate airway disease in cats. Yes, wheezing could indeed be a sign of asthma. But it is also possible that she has an upper respiratory infection. Either disease is relatively easy to treat once diagnosed. My cat wheezes after kitten URI. Is this normal or cause for concern?

Depending on what type of upper respiratory infection Gotham had as a kitten, he may have some damage to his nasal pathways that will cause him to snore or wheeze when he is sleeping. Usually this is not a problem, but if it is getting worse or you notice any other clinical signs, I would certainly contact your veterinarian to make sure it is not something that needs treatment. I understand your concerns for Scuff! Fortunately, from the signs that you describe, a foreign body obstruction from plastic is unlikely, as significant vomiting and anorexia would be expected. Wheezy breathing and changes in purring can be caused by asthma, heart disease, hyperthyroidism, among others. While I understand Scuff's fear of the vet, in this case, that is the only way that he's going to be diagnosed and treated appropriately. Consider looking into mobile vets in your area to see if they can make house calls and also have a portable x-ray machine. It sounds as though Scuff will likely need to have chest x-rays to get to the bottom of his problem. I hope that all goes well!
