My cat's nose is wet and she's licking it. When should I see a vet?

Hi. There are a lot of potential possibilities in this case. The first that comes to mind is increased thyroid. This can cause some behavior changes and vocalization. Other possibilities are pain, metabolic, or endocrine diseases, along with many others. She needs a full exam and full labs to rule out the big ones. No way around that unfortunately. It's possible it could be a bit irritated due to the weather change or rubbing up against something. It's hard to tell from the photos if that is discharge/debris in the nostril, but if you are seeing any discharge, sneezing, coughing, etc it could indicate a respiratory infection as well that should be seen by your vet. Otherwise, monitoring it for any changes and keeping your cat from pawing at or scratching at it may help it to heal.

If he is all else is normal, you can try over the counter lysine- often sold at pharmacies and pet stores. It is an antiviral and can help for upper respiratory viruses. If this is a new finding and he seems not to feel well, it would be safer to take him in.... I would also take a warm washcloth and gently exfoliate his nose and continue to keep his eyes clean as you have. I hope this helps!

Poor Leah. She could have a severe upper respiratory infection or could have something stuck in her nasal cavity causing the swelling and discharge. Without seeing her in person, I can't say for certain. When cats have issues with their nose like you are describing, they often stop eating because they can't smell their food. I think you have good reason to be concerned in this case. Anytime a cat seems less active, it indicates that something is wrong. Swallowing frequently is something we see with cats that have upper respiratory infections, or complications within the throat like polyps or ulcers. It would be worthwhile to have Liam evaluated by a vet sometime within the next day or two. They will be able to further investigate the problem and determine how concerning this problem is. Licking the lips and pawing at the mouths area can be a sign of nausea or a sign of a problem in the mouth cavity. if the issue does not resolve within 24 hours i would recommend taking her to the vet in order to get it checked and treated.

Cats commonly get an irritated eye due to trauma from a cat fight, or from something else scratching the eye. Things, like grass or fabric, can also get stuck under the eyelids and cause irritation. Infection or increased pressure are always possible though. It's difficult to know how serious this is without evaluating her, but it doesn't appear to be an emergency at this time. The mucous in the eye and licking lips just tells me that the eye is producing more discharge than normal - suspect that the licking is due to increased nasolacrimal duct drainage. For now, you can flush the eye with normal saline. Saline flush can be bought at the pharmacy, or supermarket in the eye care section.
