My cat has a wet hair loss patch on his back. Should I be concerned?

Hair loss is that area could be a few things. If you are using a topical flea medication and applying it there, that could be the cause. Cats can also get skin mites, allergies or ringworm (which humans can get), or an injury. Could the dried blood be from her scratching with her hind paw? From the photos, I don't appreciate any hair loss around the ears. Minor wounds can often heal on their own. Monitor the lesion closely, if it doesn't begin healing within a week or if it starts looking worse, have her examined by the veterinarian. Also make sure she is not scratching at the area. I am not sure if he is losing the hair just in the area where you applied the flea and tick medication or is he losing hair in general? It is a ell known side effect. Some cats have more sensitive skin and so react with losing their hair in the area of the application. As long a the skin does not look angry or red or injured you do not have to worry. Most of the time the hair will regrow. Should the skin react angrily you will need to have your vet examine your kitty. He may need some ointment on the lesion.

The causes can easily be differentiated by the clinical signs associated with it and the physical exam findings. If Freckles is only showing some hair loss without scratching or overgrooming then it could conditions such as alopecia areata that can affect cats and usually resolves on its own. If there is evidence of scratching and you start noticing some redness or irritation associated with it, then other conditions such as allergies are possible. If you notice him overgrooming himself in that area then it could be something like psychogenic alopecia which is more of a behavioral issue. I think that since he is not having overt clinical signs and it is mostly hair loss, I think it is possibly transient and could resolve on its own. You can monitor this closely and if it does not resolve or it worsens then have him examined by your veterinarian. Good luck!

I really do not know what that is from. If he has been over-grooming or scratching a lot I would be worried about fleas. If he has no other symptoms you can try this wound spray gel on that area to see if it helps. I do see some red bumps in that hairless area. If no improvement after a few weeks then you should have him to the vet for an exam. It should have nothing to do with renal disease or diet. Hair loss can occur for a lot of reasons including trauma, and infection, and endocrine diseases. If your cat is acting normally otherwise no other lesions appear sometimes monitoring it is helpful at home. However if further hair loss occurs, the area to see turns red or any bumps appear a veterinarian needs to examine your cat.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. I have not ever seen Frontline cause hair loss. However, I have seen Frontline cause reactions on the skin. This is a topical product that you used and anytime a topical product is used it has the chance to cause a reaction or irritation which may include hair loss. You can try and wash the area where the front line was applied with a oatmeal based shampoo and rinse it very well or just wait and see if after 4 weeks the problem still persists. If it continues to spread or does not resolve then I would recommend having a veterinarian examine this so that the most appropriate Diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I have seen this as a reaction to certain spot-on flea/tick treatments, vaccines and microchipping. If any of these were recently done, then I would be most suspicious of them being the cause. The skin appears a red, which indicates that something is irritating it and it appears oily, but I'm assuming that's from the antibiotic ointment. For now, it's best to just keep the area clean with a medicated cat shampoo. You can get this at the pet store. I would clean it once daily and not put the antibiotic cream on it. Use cool water when washing and rinsing to give some relief. You can stop the daily cleanings when the skin appears healthy again and the hair is obviously growing back. If the hair loss continues and the skin appears worse, then it's best to have a vet look at it, because it may need special treatment. I hope that helps and Phoebe gets better soon.
