Why is my senior cat suddenly getting a balding patch on his back?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 13 years and 6 months old | 14 lbs

Shadow, my 13 year old male maine coon/tabby cat, has a balding patch on his back. I just noticed it today and have no idea why as he and his brother, a 10 month old male short hair tabby, are both indoor cats. Shadow is typically on a renal diet however for the last two months hes been eating regular cat food as I havent been able to afford his renal food. The patch showed up within the last two days.

I really do not know what that is from. If he has been over-grooming or scratching a lot I would be worried about fleas.

If he has no other symptoms you can try this wound spray gel on that area to see if it helps. I do see some red bumps in that hairless area. If no improvement after a few weeks then you should have him to the vet for an exam. It should have nothing to do with renal disease or diet.
