My cat lost much weight, vet says normal. Should I ask for tests?

2-6 Kg is the amount he needs, if you use the dosage above this one you are risking toxicity. it is not normal at all to lose more than half of his weight, i would say it is very likely that he is suffering from a disease in the background that is causing this, i strongly recommend taking him to the vet ASAP in order to get it checked.

The thyroid level can change in a month, especially if Dewey’s previous thyroid level was towards the middle of the normal range. There are also some other more specific tests that can be positive before the total thyroid hormone level increases. A few other diseases that can cause weight loss with a normal appetite include intestinal parasites, diabetes or occasionally certain types of cancer. If Dewey is continuing to lose weight I would recommend rechecking with your vet.

There is a lot that we cannot tell from an examination on a pet, especially if it is something like sudden weight loss but the pet is otherwise acting normal. I would recommend having Kini's blood tested to evaluate overall systemic functions and see if there is an explanation for the weight loss. Check thyroid level as well. If all is normal on blood but the weight continues to fall, I would recommend x-rays and an abdominal ultrasound. I hope this helps! I recommend getting Felix seen by your vet as soon as possible for an exam and labwork to determine the reason for his weight loss and get him started on treatment.

A 3 pound weight loss is indeed significant and not normal. There could be many reasons for this, and there is just no way to pinpoint the cause without a hands-on exam and possibly blood work. I suggest you take your kitty to a veterinarian for a wellness exam.

It is a common disease in older cats and causes weight loss. Your vet can prescribe a medication to treat, if she has an elevated thyroid level.

I understand what you are saying about Lulu. I would recommend doing at least a base line blood test which checks red blood cells, white blood cells, organ function, thyroid function and blood sugar. Most cats will not loose this amount of weight in a short period. Also it sounds like you are seeing some muscle wasting which does not happen in typical weight loss. A good vet exam and some basic testing will help you determine what caused the weight loss. hope that helps
