Why does my indoor/outdoor cat lose weight in summer, gain in winter?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 9 lbs

My kitty is an indoor/outdoor kitty, every summer, she seems to get thinner and gain a bit during winter. I was told it could be because she eats Lizards and their Vet told them to give them milk because it dilutes the toxicity. Is this true?

River could certainly be losing light in the summer from more exposure to parasites, more activity while hunting, and many pets actually do tend to eat less during the heat of the summer months. There are parasites that the cats can pick up from hunting and keeping them on a routine parasite prevention Such as revolution or Advntage multi would be a good idea.
There may have been a recommendation to give the cats milk if they were excessively foaming after hunting lizards and frogs as this will decrease the taste in their mouth to stop the hypersalivation.

Hi there and thank you for your post! Milk will not dilute or counteract any toxins that I know of. Weather can affect activity level and this in turn can lead to weight fluctuations. If it is too hot or too cold, activity is typically lower so you may see an increase in weight due to low activity. If the weight continues to fluctuate or stays low, I would get River seen by your veterinarian to have some lab tests performed and an exam as well to make sure there is no cause to the weight fluctuation. You can try an over the counter pet dewormer, but there are a few intestinal parasites that need to be diagnosed by a veterinarian so a prescription medication can be used (like coccidia and giardia). My cat lost much weight, vet says normal. Should I ask for tests?

Weight loss is possible due to increased activity, but 9kg to 4kg is more drastic than I would expect. I would discuss doing bloodwork with your vet. Increased activity and weight loss is common in cats with hyperthyroidism. Weight loss can also be caused by kidney disease and diabetes. All 3 of these conditions can be diagnosed with simple bloodwork (CBC, chemistry, thyroid panel) and urinalysis.

A 3 pound weight loss is indeed significant and not normal. There could be many reasons for this, and there is just no way to pinpoint the cause without a hands-on exam and possibly blood work. I suggest you take your kitty to a veterinarian for a wellness exam.

My cat is losing a lot of weight. Is this normal for an active cat?

2-6 Kg is the amount he needs, if you use the dosage above this one you are risking toxicity. it is not normal at all to lose more than half of his weight, i would say it is very likely that he is suffering from a disease in the background that is causing this, i strongly recommend taking him to the vet ASAP in order to get it checked.

Why is my cat losing weight, has greasy fur, and heavy breathing?

I would recommend getting her in sooner than February. Weight loss usually means something more than just not liking a new food, such as intestinal parasites, endocrine disorder (such as hyperthyroidism), kidney disease, etc. The greasy coat could be from the lack of grooming (either because she doesn't feel well or it is too painful to do so - oral pain or arthritis), but could also be cause by hyperthyroidism. My 18-year-old cat eats a lot but is losing weight. What's going on?

I would recommend taking Oliver Paul into for an exam by a veterinarian. They can do a full exam, and a geriatric blood work panel. They may also take his blood pressure. High blood pressure can cause weight loss in older kitties. It can also cause eye problems. Another common and treatable condition in older kitties is hyperthyroidism. They get benign (non-cancerous) tumors on their thyroid gland that causes them to produce too much hormone which up regulates their metabolism. They will eat a lot and continue to drop weight. My cat lost weight, should I be concerned about her health long-term?

As long as she’s acting normally, eating and drinking fine then I’m not overly concerned about it. Cats often are more active in the spring and summer and she may have lost weight from that. I would weigh her monthly and if the weight loss continues or she is lethargic, has a poor haircoat, or isn’t eating well then take her in for an exam soon.
