Why is my dog losing weight and eating like she's starving after spay?

It’s not normal for a pet to lose weight after being spayed. In fact most cats have a weight gaining problem after they get altered. I would recommend having her examined by your vet and also to have her stool checked for parasites. Most weight loss is due to an intestinal worm in pets this young. Cats can be prone to weight gain after being spayed due to the hormonal changes this causes. I would recommend switching her to a weight management food that is lower in calories than a regular adult diet. If you are able to, feeding her canned food only will also help, since canned food is less calorie dense due to its water content. If you want to leave some dry food out for her, consider feeding it from a puzzle toy like an Eggcersizer or Kibble Nibble - this way, she has to play with the toy to get the food out, which provides her with some additional exercise and also limits how much she can eat at a time.

If she eats very little but still gains a lot of weight it is not normal, she could be suffering from hypothyroidism which is an hormonal disease. you need to take her to the vet ASAP in order to have a blood test done first.

Hi Alivia! Not all cats gain weight when they are spayed, but losing weight is concerning. I'd take Maude back into the vet for a physical exam, blood work, and a urinalysis. This will help determine if there is a physical issue with her causing the weight loss. Best of luck.

I recommend getting her seen by your vet for an exam and bloodwork. She could have parasites, also, voracious appetite without weight gain or weight loss is a sign of diabetes. It could be that the pups have worn her out. She should have been eating puppy food the whole time she was pregnant and nursing. If she was not, this could be partly responsible for her thin condition. Your vet will give you a treatment plan, based on the findings.
