Why is my 12-year-old cat losing weight with low kidney/protein?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 12 years and 9 months old | 12 lbs

My 12 year old cats blood work came back with low kidney....15 and low protein. His only symptoms is lack of appetite and a little weight loss. My vet is waiting to hear from a specialist...he’s a small town vet and I don’t really think is sure he knows what’s going on. I’m just wondering to see if anyone knows anything about what would be going on with my cat copper. Thank you

Is there a chance you can obtain a copy of the lab work and post it here as a picture? We could look at the values and give you our thoughts from there. Low protein can be caused by a few main problems decreased protein intake, protein loss, and decreased production. The lab work may be helpful in giving clues on the cause. Thanks in advance and we will look for the lab work in a new question soon. Thank you for using Pet Coach.
