Why is my cat losing weight, hair, has scabs, and breathing issues?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. What you are descri bing could be secondary to a bacterial skin infection or allergies. I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look cheech to try and figure okkut why he is losing weight and why he is scratching. He may need s course of an antibiotic if this is a skin infection. I would check his thyroid level as well to make sure the weight loss is not from hyperthyroidism. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. From your description, the mass sounds like a ruptured abscess. The weight loss and fur loss may or may not be related. He should be evaluated by a veterinarian. If he has not been tested for feline leukemia and aids, he should be as soon as possibly. Additionally, he should be dewormed, vaccinated and treated for fleas.

This is probably caused by an allergic reaction. first of all make sure you de-flea Pepper regularly every month with a high quality spot on (ex. Advantage) as fleas are by far the most common reason for these reactions. If the fleas are not the problem, it could be an allergic reaction to food or an environmental factor. this is more complicated to treat and will sometimes require medications such as Steroids, anti histamines or cyclosporin in order to stop the allergy.

I would recommend getting her in sooner than February. Weight loss usually means something more than just not liking a new food, such as intestinal parasites, endocrine disorder (such as hyperthyroidism), kidney disease, etc. The greasy coat could be from the lack of grooming (either because she doesn't feel well or it is too painful to do so - oral pain or arthritis), but could also be cause by hyperthyroidism. It looks like your cat has a skin infection, most likely caused by allergies or fleas. The allergies can be from a protein in her food or to something in the environment, like grasses, pollens, dust etc. I would recommend taking your cat in to see the vet so she can be started on some antibiotics to help clear up her skin. I would also recommend discussing with your vet some options for medication to help control her allergies and itch like Atopica.

If Morris is not on any sort of a flea control I strongly suspect this may be flea related. Cat skin off and have a flea allergy wear just the bite from one or two fleas will cause them to break out and scabs around the head and neck. Because cats groom so much you may not necessarily find any fleas or flea dirt on his body. If he is not on flea prevention I strongly recommend a product such as advantage board vantage multi for cats or Bravecto for cats if you have any problems with ticks in your area. It can take up to 3 to 4 months to get rid of a flea infestation by treating only the pets. If Morris is very itchy a veterinary visit for medication to help relieve some of the itching and assess for infection may be necessary while you get the fleas under control. If fleas are not a problem then other allergies can possibly cause the same type of skin lesions. Jazzy could have a skin infection causing the itching and hair loss. You can try a medicated shampoo but with cats they usually need an antibiotic and possibly a steroid injection for their skin to clear up. Also depending on her age she may need blood work to make sure no underlying issues are causing her thin body condition (thyroid abnormality, kidney issues, parasites)
