My cat threw up, is lethargic, and won't eat. Should I see a vet?

My cat threw up the usual food we feed her and then bile yesterday night. Today she is lethargic and acting out of the ordinary. she hasn’t drank water or eaten her favorite treats. What should i do?

I would take Gypsy into the vet right away. I see that she isn't spayed, and her symptoms could be indicative of a pyometra. A pyometra is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment. It could also be that she is sick with a GI illness or pancreatitis causing her symptoms, but because I can't see her in person to rule out a pyometra and the fact that it is so deadly, it's best she sees a vet now. Poor Ophelia! Even though she is a young cat, one of my first concerns with reading her symptoms is that she may have a pyometra (infection of the uterus). Pyometras do typically occur in older cats, but they can occur in cats of any age. Signs seen with a pyometra vomiting, anorexia, lethargy, and an increase in water drinking. She could also have a GI illness, pancreatitis, eaten something rotten, or a foreign body. Given her signs and that she is very weak, I think it would be best that she is seen by a vet now. The vet can do a physical exam, routine blood tests, a urinalysis, and possibly x-rays to diagnose what is causing her symptoms. Once the cause is found, then the vet can start treatment. If she has a pyometra, for example, spaying her is the recommended treatment.

Why is my cat vomiting, not eating, and not drinking? Is it serious?

Poor Ellie! I see that she isn't spayed. When cats aren't spayed, they can be prone to a life threatening infection of the uterus called a pyometra. This would cause her to vomit, not eat, and not drink. Other causes include a severe GI illness, eating something rotten, pancreatitis, or a foreign body. Given the risk of a pyometra and the fact that she isn't eating, drinking, and keeps vomiting, my recommendation is to have Ellie seen by a vet immediately. The vet can do a physical exam, blood tests, a urinalysis, and possibly x-rays to diagnose what is causing her symptoms so she can be treated. She likely needs a shot to stop the vomiting, and IV fluids for hydration along with any other treatment the vet deems necessary. If she does have a pyometra, spaying her is one of the recommended treatments. Please take her into a vet ASAP.

If this has been going on for more than a few days it might be better to see an emergency veterinarian today, however if the symptoms are more recent you may be able to wait. If Greta's gums seem pale or she is having trouble breathing, or if she has a history of other medical problems it would also be better to have her seen today. Otherwise I think you can probably wait until tomorrow. Ultimately these symptoms are somewhat vague and can be a sign of a number of problems so you should go with your gut.

Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Poor Gypsy has picked up an infection, either bacterial or viral. It is also possibly he has gotten into a fight with another cat & has sustained a bite which in now infected. Cats can not go very long without eating. After just 3 days we can see damage to the liver. Gypsy needs to see a veterinarian tomorrow to see if he needs some fluids & antibiotics to help get well & feel better.

Ebony may have a condition known as pyometra, especially if she is unspayed and having vaginal discharge. This is essentially an infection in the uterus, which causes lethargy and vomiting, and is very uncomfortable. This condition can be life threatening and requires immediate veterinary attention. Ebony's symptoms can also be due to a urinary tract infection or underlying medical condition. I recommend having her seen right away, there are emergency clinics open 24 hours in most towns/cities.
