Why is my cat throwing up after taking Fluconazole for cryptococcus?

Your vet likely instructed you to stop one medication and switch to the other in order to avoid any chance of toxicity. I would say that this would be an uncommon side effect of Fluconazole but I cannot rule it out for sure. I would stop the Fluconazole and see if this helps resolve the problem. The heavy breathing could be due to Coke being in pain. This sounds more of a back problem and if his legs are not working well and he seems to be paralyzed or wobbly in the hind end, this could be due to a spinal issue if there is a prolapsed spinal disc. If the symptoms do not resolve after stopping fluconazole, I would recommend discussing a protruding intervertebral disc with the vet as a possible cause of the symptoms. This can be treated using steroids and pain medications. In some cases, surgical intervention is required to restore function back to the legs. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. It can sometimes cause vomiting as the parasites are being killed. They may send her home with an anti-nausea medication if this is the case. This medication can typically given as an injection by the veterinarian and then tablets to continue at home. I hope this information helps!

No the medication itself does not cause pruritis (itching). The ringworm infection however does cause itching, especially as it is healing. Ringworm also is best treated with both a topical and oral medication for faster results. I hope that your furry friend gets rid of this ringworm infection soon! Best wishes and take care.

Fluconazole has been found to be very safe in dogs and the most common side effects are loss of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea. Seizures are not a common side effect of Fluconazole. If your dog is healthy and took the fluconazole with no problems than it is unlikely to cause seizures in the future.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! What is your Vet trying to treat Mau for? If you are referring to Fluconazole 200mg tablets then yes that is way too much for a 2.9 pound cat. The dose is 5-10mg/kg or for adult cats 50-100mg. I would contact your Vet!

Poor Frodo! Some cats do vomit during deworming due to the strength of the medication combined with the parasites moving through the GI system. These side effects should only last a few days, so if it's been longer than that, I would be concerned that it could be due to something else, such as a GI illness, a foreign body, or pancreatitis. I recommend withholding food for 12 hours, then feeding a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.
