Is my cat having a vaccine reaction? He's jittery and breathing fast.

Poor Jasper! The timing of his signs certainly correlate with his vaccine. Not eating and lethargy (as well as vomiting, diarrhea, facial swelling and hives) can be signs of a vaccine reaction. Vaccine reactions are uncommon, but do happen. If Jasper still isn't eating by later today, I would give your vet a call to have him rechecked. Some vaccine reactions require steroids and/or antihistamines for treatment.

This is very common after vaccines. Let him be alone tonight and let him rest. I would not be concerned unless he starts vomiting, having diarrhea, has hives or a swollen face. If any of these symptoms are noticed that I would contact your vet as this is likely a vaccine reaction. Also make sure he is still eating. He may not eat tonight but his appetite should pick up by tomorrow. If he isn't starting to act more normal in the next day or two, contact your vet for an exam.

Hello and thank you for your question. I hate to hear that Covid-Max (love that name!) is not feeling well. It's possible that Max is having a vaccine reaction. These generally occur within 24 hours and can range from severe lethargy, fever, swelling of the face to collapse. He may have a fever today which is not uncommon with a vaccine reaction (though not always present). I recommend to call your veterinarian right. They may want to exam Max again to check for signs of a reaction and to treat him. Additionally, if this is a vaccine reaction, they will take precautions in the future to decrease the potential for another reaction. This may include giving him an anti-histamine before his vaccines, spreading out his vaccines or giving him a steroid. I hope this helps and that Max starts feeling better quickly! It is certainly possible that he is having a vaccine reaction. If tomorrow morning he isn’t back to normal then I would call for a follow appointment with your veterinarian as soon as possible. They many need to give him some medication for nausea. Also, they will want to document the possible reaction so that next time he needs vaccinations he can be given medication ahead of time to prevent a reaction. These two vaccines are commonly given at the same time. They are both well tolerated in most cats. Your cat, given the history, may be a bit more uncomfortable after but it should resolve in a day or two . If not, recheck with your veterinarian.

It can be normal for kittens to be somewhat tired and sore after vaccination, just like human children. Some may run a low-grade fever and not eat well for the first day or so after their shots. What is NOT normal would be any of the following symptoms: repeated vomiting, pale gums, difficulty breathing, or collapse/extreme weakness - these are signs of a serious allergic reaction. This is very rare following vaccination, but if it occurs it can be life-threatening - so if you observe any of these signs, make sure to get your kitten to the vet right away. If she is just tired and sore, it should be fine to monitor her at home - she should be feeling better within the next 24-48 hours.
