Can a vaccine cause FIV in my cat? She's sick after her FVRCP shot.

I agree, those symptoms are concerning for intestinal, oral, or kidney disease. Unless the test was falsely positive, cats don't outgrow FIV. There is also no cure for the virus, though not all cats that have it will develop disease. I would recommend that Tiger get checked out by the vet. After a thorough physical exam and review of his symptoms, the vet may recommend bloodwork, urinalysis, or x-rays to see what is going on. Try not to worry too much as it is incredibly unlikely that this vaccine will cause any issues with Lolly. The amount of virus in these vaccines is only enough to stimulate the immune system but not to actually cause the disease itself. For Lolly to infect the other are she would have to have the disease. Personally I vaccinate all cats for felv regardless of whether they go outside just in case they were to escape from the house etc. The vaccine won't do her any harm, but it is of course your decision whether you want her to have it or not, I imagine your vet made a mistake in giving it because it is so often done in the routine.

Cats shouldn't catch any human viruses, it's probably just coincidence that everybody starting getting ill at the same time - or it could be related to allergens in the air. Cats with FIV have a harder time in general with any infection - if your positive cat is having a rough time, he may need to be hospitalized for oxygen, fluids, medications, or antibiotics for secondary bacterial infections.

Ongoing chronic viral infections seldom present with a fever unless there is an additional infection due to poor immune system. Fever is an early response by the body to fight off a new infection - if this fails such as with FIP/FELV/FIV and the immune system fails to clear the infection long term there will not be a fever as a result of these infections. I strongly recommend testing given the ongoing, vague signs of debility which is common with all of these diseases

I am so, so sorry to hear about Grace. I know how hard it is to lose a pet, and how difficult it is to make the decision to let them go. It is very unlikely that the FVRCP booster had anything to do with her decline, though I understand how coincidental it appears to be. It is very common for veterinarians to give this shot to older pets and even to immunocompromised animals, as they are the most at risk for the diseases the shot protects against. Without knowing her complete history, it does sound like she had some other issues brewing even before she had the vaccine. Most pets that have a true vaccine reaction exhibit those symptoms within a few hours - not over several months. I am so terribly sorry that you had to see Grace at her sickest, but I know that you did everything you could for her, and that she had the best care right up until you made that difficult decision. Please take comfort in knowing that making the decision to euthanize our pets when they are in intractable pain, though one of the hardest decisions we ever have to make, is the last great gift that we can give them. Radiographs of your cat's chest and abdomen will reveal any abnormalities with his heart, lungs, will show if there is fluid accumulated, any tumors or anatomical changes that signal heart or pulmonary disorders or other conditions that could be adversely affecting him. You can try to stimulate his appetite by adding some water or low sodium chicken broth to dry food, mixing in a little wet food and'or warming his food. Warming makes it more aromatic and therefore more appealing to a cat with a depressed appetite. It is vital that he continues to eat, as cats can experience liver damage after only a couple of days if not eating. Work closely with your vet, call and ask questions, get him in for rechecks, this helps them keep on top of Bunlot's condition.

I'm so sorry that your foster is not doing well. It sounds like she has been through a lot in her short life. Certainly, kittens that have a severe upper respiratory infection young in life can take a while to bounce back. You can perform a FeLV and FIV test at any time, but the results will have to be taken with a grain of salt at her age. The FIV test is an antibody test, so she could test positive if her mom was positive, but she may not have the virus. The FeLV test is usually a little more accurate in young kittens, but not always. The FeLV test looks for virus in white blood cells, so if her white blood cell count is low from her infection if may appear negative even if she has the virus. So while you can test at any age, you may need to repeat the tests again because of the reasons discussed above.
