Can cats get addicted to treats like Temptations? How to stop?

Well, as long as he is eating his dried food fine, you can either stop the treats completely, he will forget about them eventually and you can then try him again on different treats. Alternatively you can give him 2-3 temptations a day, this isn't going to cause him any harm as long as it's in small quantities.

Too much human food adds extra calories a cat doesn't need. In addition, it can make them picky, as they tend to like human food better and then won't eat their cat food. It's fine to give as an occasional treat, but I actually never give my cats human food at all. For a treat for them, I give them Temptations or canned food. I hope this helps!

If you are concerned about Boris associating treat with getting on the counter, I recommend turning the action into a "get down" command, and treating once he is off the counter, rather than when he is on it. That way he can start to associate the command (and treat) with being off the counter instead of on it. You can also use a nice toy such as a feather on a stick to sort of lure him off of the counter, and then proceed to treat and interact with him on the ground. If he starts hopping up onto the counter regularly and 'demanding' a treat, you may need to do what is called extinction behavior. This is where you ignore the behavior (being on the counter) until he hops back off on his own, in which you then reward him with attention and treats again. Something to note, extinction behaviors usually get worse temporarily before they start to improve as the pet will try to do the behavior more to try and get attention before giving up -- this doesn't mean you're failing, it means it's working!

You may try giving him commercial cats treats (there is a brand called Temptations that most cats seem to love). Greenies are treats that are actually good for their teeth and come in many flavors as well. Any type of meat you give Pelly needs to be lean and free of fat and cooked. You may try a small amount (like a pinky finger nail size) of beef or turkey. Remember this should only be in moderation. These foods could upset his tummy if he is sensitive or they are given in excess. I hope this helps.

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Temptations and Greenies are not very digestible which is why they can cause stomach upset. Commericial treats such as these can be highly processed, contain a variety of aritcial ingredients and flavors and contain high fat and low fiber content with fillers in them which can cause GI upset. A good alternative would be Smittens cat treats by Honest Kitchen which are all natural. I hope this helps!

As with all treats, moderation is the best approach. You can give Ashton cat treats here and there and they will not mess up his diet, if you feed one or two a day. However, instead of food treats, treat him with cat nip sprinkled on a towel....he will love this even more. Prescription urinary health food usually has to come from the vet.
