Is my cat's tiredness and sleeping a side effect of a rabies vaccine?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Male | unneutered | 4 months and 12 days old | 4 lbs

Hello, my 4month old cat got a rabies vaccine this morning at 8:15am and around 1pm his behavior complety changed, he didn’t want to play, he spent the all afternoon and evening sleeping on our bed and not being with us, usually he follows us everywhere we go, the way he is looking at us is not usual.... He just look very tired with no juice. My husband and I are wondering if this could be a negative aide effect of the vaccin that He got today? Thank you for your help.

Hi. Poor Sunny. I know it may seem abnormal, but it is common and normal to have a patient be quiet, lethargic, hide, skip a meal, and ecen be sore and whiny after a vaccine. Some vaccines affect patients more then others. I would not worry unless Sunny starts vlmiting, having excessive lethargy, hives, swelling, or trouble breathing. I would monitor and call your veterinarian if any further signs occur.

    Typically, vaccinations will cause drowsiness, soreness in the area where injected, swelling where the vaccine was administered and decreased energy. If there is anything such as facial swelling, hive formation, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, inappetance then I would recommend having Everest examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Hi, Sweet Ginger is looking quite sleepy in the pic. Signs you could still see as a reaction to the cat vaccine are : lethargy (already showing), fever, loss of appetite, vomiting ,diarrhea, Swelling (a lump) and/ redness around the injection site. These signs are short lived around 24-48 hours post vaccination. If you do notice a small lump at the site of the injection that can appears also several days after just monitor it should reduce and disappear in the next few weeks. Hope this helps

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your kitten. Lethargy is common after a vaccine. If she vomits, develops facial swelling or has difficulty breathing, this is a sign of vaccine reaction. This needs immediate veterinary care. A small amount of bleeding can occur on the skin from the injection. I hope this information helps!

This sounds like a side effect of the vaccine, it's not super common but i'v seen a few cases already and this usually resolves within 48-72 hours. your vet could give her pain killers for a couple days if her condition seems to be really bad.

My cat is sleeping a lot and sore after vaccine. Is this normal?
I'm so sorry that Noushmc isn't feeling well. Pain at the injection site and mild lethargy are very common with vaccinations and considered normal since the vaccination is stimulating the immune system. It usually lasts 1-2 days and will resolve on its own. If Nouschmc is not eating, is vomiting or it lasts more than 2 days, I would contact your veterinarian. Good luck! My dog got a rabies shot too soon. Is he okay? Why is he tired?
This is absolutely no problem. We often vaccinate against rabies more often when dogs need to travel abroad and need to show a particularly high vaccination titer. It is a normal side effect that your dog is a bit tired after the vaccination.

Why is my dog lethargic and sad after his rabies shot and moving?
Sometimes vaccines can cause dogs to feel a bit groggy, a bit like a person getting their inoculations. However it doesn't tend to be that pronounced. Dogs are very sensitive to new environments and stress so so wouldn't be surprised if a lot of it is down to the changes occurring. Whilst he is eating and drinking normally I wouldn't worry too much. However if he deteriorates or dies not return to his usual self in a few days it would be best to get him examined.

These two vaccines are commonly given at the same time. They are both well tolerated in most cats. Your cat, given the history, may be a bit more uncomfortable after but it should resolve in a day or two . If not, recheck with your veterinarian.
