My cat is thin and not eating. How can I help him gain weight safely?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered

My cat recently spent a lot of time outside - he is about 7 years old now - and we got him to come in and stay inside. I noticed today that he is underweight. I dont have his exact weight, but I can feel the vertebrae of his spine and his ribs with very light touches. He isn't sensitive, he doesn't get upset or anything. He doesn't eat the dry food we have without serious prompting, and doesn't eat much at all. How can I help him regain the weight he lost while outside?

First off, Lonestarr needs to see a vet. He could have a dental problem preventing him from eating correctly and thus causing the weight loss, or he could have a medical illness like kidney disease causing the weight loss. I'd take him into the vet in the morning. If he checks out healthy, then the vet can discuss safe ways to get him to gain weight.
