Concerned about my cat's thick urine and litter box accidents?

Urine with an unusual "sticky" feeling is a common sign of diabetes, due to increased levels of glucose in the urine - this is a common problem in older cats. Other things that could cause an increased amount of urine in the litterbox along with an abnormal appearance would include chronic kidney disease, or hyperthyroidism. I would recommend taking CC to the vet for an exam as soon as you are able to - he/she can do blood work and urine testing to help diagnose the problem and get her started on appropriate treatment.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It sounds like Iggy is urinating quite frequently, so there is a chance there is an underlying reason for this. Causes of increased urination (& increased drinking) including endocrine (hormonal) diseases such as diabetes or hyperthyroidism, kidney disease, liver disease, or behavioral issues. I recommend having Iggy seen by your veterinarian who can perform blood tests to rule out some of these diseases very easily. If no obvious pathologic cause is found, Iggy's clinical signs may be behavioral in origin. Some things that can be done to help this is adding a litter box to the house, minimizing stress in the house, and adding in a feline pheromone diffuser such as Feliway. I hope this is helpful!

Hello, and thanks for your question. Poor Boo! It sounds like Boo probably has a urinary tract infection. She should be seen by your vet, where they will examine her and evaluate a sample of her urine to look for evidence of infection. They will set her up with antibiotics if indicated to treat the infection. I also see she is unspayed. Frequent attempts to urinate can also be a symptom of a life threatening uterine infection ("pyometra"), or very rarely a urethral obstruction (though this is much more common in male cats, and quite rare in females). If Boo gets sicker overnight she may need to be taken to the emergency vet. However, these possibilities would be much less likely than a urinary tract infection. Tiger may have a urinary tract infection or other issue causing dehydration and darker colored urine. I'd recommend having her examined by a veterinarian and also having a urine sample checked out. If necessary she can be given fluids as an injection to rehydrate her and be prescribed antibiotics to treat any infection that may be present. You can try offering her an all canned food diet to try to maintain her hydration. However, I do think she should be examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible. If Lumi is only passing small amounts of urine he could have cystitis (bladder inflammation), crystals in his urine, bladder stones or even a UTI. Since Lumi is a male cat he has the risk of obstructing and not being able to urinate at all. A urinary obstruction is life threatening. I recommend that he see a Vet today to relieve his discomfort and prevent it from worsening. I hope this helps and I wish Lumi the best!

These signs might be compatible with a urinary tract infection/inflammation. Stress related (idiopathic type of inflammation) infection and presence of crystals are the most common causes of it. These signs must be checked as soon as possible as urinary tract infection can be dangerous in male (especially neutered) cats as it can develop into a urinary tract obstruction/blockage. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed.
