When will my cat expel tapeworms after treatment & how effective?

Hello. Once the tapeworm has been killed by the wormer, the parasite is often digested ( it exerts a protective coating while alive ), & we usually do not see tapeworms passed in the stool. If it was a particularly heavy infestation, you may see some pass out, but this is not the norm. Any signs of tape segments should also disappear shortly. I like Profender, it is a good product, but I would follow label directions & reapply when recommended. Otherwise, once it wears off, your cat can pick up more tapeworms from hunting & from fleas ( make sure you are using a good flea preventative, too ). The Praziquantel should kill the tapeworm within a few hours. The tapeworm will be eliminated with all its segments (proglottids) with the feces. I would think this happens within 2 days at the longest.

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Cats should be treated with an initial dose (based on the label instructions) and then again after 3 weeks. DO NOT give multiple doses in a day. Cats get tapeworms by ingested fleas that are infected with the tapeworm larvae so be sure to get the fleas under control.

Sometimes the worms die and just come out like mucus in the stool, not full worms. If you gave the proper dose I’m sure it was effective. Unless your vet gave you specific instructions, the dewormers are different medications and do not interact, so they can be given at the same time. The only reason to separate the dewormers would be if there is a large worm infestation and the deworming is likely to cause diarrhea. To be on the safe side, you could wait 2 days after the roundworm medication to give the tapeworm medication. That means the medication is working, as you can frequently see dead worms after a treatment. Godive will need another deworming treatment in two weeks to kill all the worms, and I would give her another dose then.

Tapeworms are relatively straight forward to treat, so sorry you are having such a hard time. However you should do the following: 1) Give tapeworm medicine - Praziquantel (you may have to visit your vet for this if not available over the counter). Typically you only need 1 dose. 2) Get Boo-butiful on a good monthly flea preventative. My top recommendation is Revolution topical or Advantage Multi. Tapeworms come from your pet either ingesting a flea or eating another pets poop with "live" tapeworms in it. I hope this helps you get rid of your fur baby's pesty friends!
