My cat has a swollen lip for a week. Is it serious? What to do?

Hello, my cat has A swollen lip for about a week now. He's spending half of the day outside the house. What can it be? And what can we do to help him?

Any lumps/bumps that you notice on your pet should be checked out by your vet. Lumps in this location can be any of these things:

* abscess (infection)
* cyst
* cancer (benign or malignant)
* rodent ulcer

I suggest you find a vet to take him to for an examination. There are no home treatments for any of these possibilities. Also, treatment depends on what the lump is - all those possibilities have different treatments.

This could be a temporary inflammatory reaction -0 either to trauma or contact irritation. If he is otherwise well and is not in pain I would wait 72hours to see if it starts to dry up and reduce in size. If it is increasing or still moist at this stage then a vet check would be recommended

Without a picture it's difficult to guess, but lip swelling can be a rodent ulcer, which is usually due to an allergy. Make sure Leonardo is on flea prevention and you can also try switching his water and food bowls to a different material. If it doesn't go away you should see a vet as he may need further treatment.

My cat has a swollen lip for days. Is it serious or an emergency?

The swelling could be caused by blunt trauma (for example if she run into something) or allergic reaction. If it is not bothering Kitty at all, is not itchy or painful when you touch it, I would leave it for another 2-3 days. Most of the mild swelling regardless on the cause should disappear within 5-7 days. If the swelling becomes itchy, painful or gets bigger, please take Kitty to your local vets for a check up.

What's this pink swollen spot on my cat's mouth? How do I treat it?

There are a number of things that this could be. Cats can get small pink raw spots or swollen areas on their lips called rodent ulcers, which are caused by allergies. Other possibilities would include an insect bite or local inflammatory reaction of some kind, a localized bacterial infection, or even some type of tumor. Unfortunately, there isn't anything over the counter that can be used to treat any of these problems - you can monitor the swollen area for the next few days to see if it resolves on its own, but if it doesn't or if it seems to be getting larger, then Alaska will need to be examined by a vet. He/she can do some simple skin tests if needed to help determine the problem and get her started on appropriate medication to treat it.

This looks to be a rodent ulcer (eosinophilic granuloma complex). She really needs to see a vet for this issue. This is not something you can treat with over the counter medications. Also, there are not many over the counter medications that are safe for cats. These lesions are treated, typically, with antibiotics and steroids. I am sorry to hear that! I do think going to the vet would be a good idea. Cats can get many types of lumps at their mouths. From your description one thing I would want to rule out is eosinophilic plaques. These can be caused by allergies so getting on a low allergen food (I would recommend prescription due to cross-contamination at the manufacturing level) and medications can be vital! Of course it is hard to tell without looking at her so your vet may want to rule tests or take a biopsy first! I hope this helps!
