Why is my cat's lip swollen and bald? Is it an allergy or bug bite?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 2 years and 10 months old | 8 lbs

My cat has a bald swollen area at the entrance of his mouth. He is acting normal and doesn’t seem to be in much pain when I exam it. Teeth and gums are not effected. The third picture is how his mouth looks normally. I am thinking he got stung or bitten by a bug as he loves to eat anything that moves. No new cat food or anything I’d think would be an allergic reaction. Thank you so much for your help and advice.

This is a common look for cats who are allergic to their food bowls -- if any of his bowls are plastic, I'd recommend switching them out for glass and washing daily (or at least every other day). It could be caused by other allergies or a bug bite as well, and often goes away on it's own. If switching bowls (if applicable) and giving it a week doesn't make it go away, I'd recommend a vet visit.
