My pet is suddenly very sick, won't eat or move. What should I do?

I am so very sorry to hear about your dog. Based on your photos she looks severely emaciated and dehydrated, and possibly anemic (I can see her third eyelid in one photo and it looks quite pale). The possible causes are many and could include severe parasitism, infectious disease, autoimmune disease, organ failure, cancer, toxin exposure. Your dog needs veterinary attention right away if she is to survive, or to help her pass peacefully if you are unable to provide care for her. It sounds like she is suffering and she needs to be examined by a vet and have some testing done (such as stool testing and bloodwork to start) to try to determine why she is so ill. Unfortunately, no there isn't anything you can do for her at home at this point. I would be very concerned that Pearl's symptoms are caused by a pyometra, which is a life threatening infection of the uterus. That would cause her to vomit, become anorexic, and be very lethargic. A pyometra is fatal without treatment, and the prognosis of pyometras depending on how fast she gets treatment. The longer treatment is delayed, the worse the outcome will be because the dog gets progressively sicker. Her symptoms could also be caused by a severe GI illness, eating something rotten, a foreign body, liver disease, kidney failure, or cancer. I will give you a number of resources that may help you afford a vet. You can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. This is not specific to any one condition, but does indicate that she is not feeling well. It's good that she is still eating and drinking well, but they are usually very sick when they act like this. For these cases, I recommend they see a vet as soon as possible, because birds can quickly worsen in condition and have life-threatening complications. Until the cause of this is found, there is not much that can be done except keep her in a warm environment with plenty of food and water available. I know the answer is somewhat vague, but I hope that helps and Kiwi gets better soon.

I sam so sorry that she’s not doing well. From what you describe, I’m very concerned about her and you need to seek emergency veterinary care immediately. Call your vet’s office even if they are closed—they likely have a recording for either how to contact the vet in case of an emergency, or information for the nearest vet clinic. There are many possible causes for what’s going on, but it sounds like at the very least she needs some IV fluids and some lab work and possible X-rays may be needed. I am so sorry there isn’t something I can suggest you do for her at home at this point, but if she’s just lying there, she seems cold, and her breathing is labored, you have got to get her to a vet. Hello. I am sorry to hear that Sugar is feeling so sick. When a puppy is lying around, not eating or drinking they are usually very ill. This may be either an infection (like Parvo), a problem she was born with (a congenital problem), or possibly something she ate or got into. I understand you are short on finances. Please offer Sugar some baby food directly into her mouth. If she will not take baby food from you and has not eaten all day her blood sugar may get dangerously low. You should see if she can lick up a small amount of karo syrup to try and increase her blood sugar level. If at all possible I would get her to an emergency veterinarian tonight to have her assessed. At least an exam can give you a lot of information about her vitals and they can lead you in the right direction to try and get her better. I hope the best for her.

I can’t diagnose her over the internet but i can tell you that her situation sounds very grave. A cat -especially a kitten- who will not eat, seems blind, and is not moving, needs intensive testing and care- and may still not make it. Hypoglycemia and hypothermia (they often go together) are first on my list. Congenital brain or heart problems and infectious diseases are also possible. If she can still swallow you can continue the water. You can place a little white Karo syrup or honey on her gums for some blood sugar stabilization. If she perks up with that, keep her warm and continue small amounts of water and Karo syrup every half hour or so. But if she doesn’t perk up within a few minutes of warming and karo, she may have bigger problems. And in that case, those won’t be enough to keep her hydrated or from losing weight. She would need a vet for anything beyond that, and you may need to make a tough decision to humanely euthanize her. :( I’m so sorry and I wish the best for you and Buttercup.

Poor Keema. When pets don't respond to treatment as expected, it can mean that the real cause of the illness has not been identified and the appropriate treatment has not been started. I recommend to call your veterinarian again and have Keema examined again. She should have bloodwork to check for signs of kidney or liver disease. She may also need radiographs to look for cancerous tumors. Until the cause of her illness is discovered, it may be difficult to find an effective treatment.
